Amex travel credit expiry in a month

Hi all,

I have amex travel credit for 400 and expiry in early 2021. I was planning to use in this school holiday but unfortunately the outbreak covid in sydeny. We can’t plan anything. I called amex they not letting me extend it. I was kind upset with the outcome.
I am wondering anyone had same situation. What’s best I could do.

Thanks in advance any reply

  • Probably just book a flight as late as you can next year and hope Sydney will come out of lockdown by then

  • Can you book a flight for late next year and then sell the ticket? Win/Win

  • If worst gets to worst, book a hotel staycation that is fully refundable later in 2021..and see what happens.

    • You won't get a refund of the travel credit portion. But I would book a hotel with it in advance too.

      • +1

they can only be used on qantas flights only.

        no hotels

      • I had to cancel a booking earlier in the month and the travel credit was reissued with a new 12 month expiry date.

  • Can you book a flight for later in 2021 and hope for a Qantas schedule change? Then, you can retain the value as Qantas credits.

  • +2

Donate it to me and I will write you a thank you card that will make you feel better.

  • Did you get the email from Amex saying that you could use it in the Qantas Rewards store?

  • I used my wife's travel credit on flights to Sydney next month. Booked earlier in the year then cancelled the card due to the annual fee approaching. I feel it will be an interesting call to AMEX when/if i have to cancel/rebook.

    • Have you had this call yet? I think I will need to make it next week, not feeling optimistic about it.

      • yep, no problems at all. Much better than i expected. I did have to chase up a month later and provide a bsb acct details to get the money transferred as it was sitting in the closed account. But just a matter of keeping an eye on it.

        • Wow - you got a full refund for the travel credit??

          • +1

@ozbargain2019: Yes, expected more pain to be honest

            • @beesquared: Did the airline cancel the flight?

              • @tunzafun001: No, COVID was breaking out in jan this year through Sydney, so rang to see about cancelling. No issues

                • @beesquared: Hmmm, nice work. I was only able to change to a different flight. The said to get a refund the airline would need to be the one who cancels the flight

  • Mmmmm, I have over $2.5K of amex travel credits to use up. First one is $200 which expires this month too. Can be used on flights or hotels.

  • I used my Amex travel voucher for a flight from Perth to Melb in late July (wanted to watch a weekend of footy). Cancelled my card due to annual fee incoming. Then lockdown happened. Called Amex and they refunded me cash in the back.

    Very happy with that.

    • Good outcome but maybe hard for others to get the same result.

  • Is selling travel vouchers still a thing?

  • absolutely cookery this Northern Beaches outbreak. Been on hold for 90mins+ with Amex now

  • That's a bit odd. What i was told is there will be 2 sets of $400 travel voucher for me next year. Called in twice too.

  • I have a $400 credit expiring in 4 days time. Rang Amex and they said nope they don’t have the option to extend it.

  • totally reckon this is rubbish of Amex, in the same situation. got multiple accounts as well…

    • Trying to get some benefit from paying and getting nothing from it, I don't really want to move away from amex but they are unwilling to give any sort of credits or refunds, my aim now is to not pay them any interest anymore.
