Moving to First Apartment Utilities Advice Needed

I’m moving to a North Ryde apartment on the 6th next year so I can be in walking distance to work. I’ve only been sharing with friends before and this is the first time getting a place by myself. Since I’ve only ever lived in shared houses where utilities are already included in the rent, I have never had to set it up before. I would like to ask the more experienced users here for any advice and if my choices are okay.

Internet - superloop (50/20)
Electricity and gas -
Energy Australia (No Frills)
or
ReAmped Advance + Flora Gas Plus

I’m also planning to buy a fridge and a mattress/bed when Boxing Day sales are on so any recommendations/advice would be appreciated!

I have used Origin energy across two apartments in Sydney, experience has been great. Had to disconnect old apartment and move my account to the new one, all was smooth.
    Power and gas.

Also the recent Origin one big switch offer was a little cheaper than anyone else (19% off gov base rate & daily connection charge).

    • I will have a look at origin thank you! I'm definitely leaning more towards bundling power and gas together for a smoother transition when I move to a new place again or decide to change providers.

You might also need to pay for water.

Even if the lease says free water or a free amount of water per quarter, in my experience they will still try their luck and just quietly mail the bill to you anyway.

    • Yeah, my lease agreement said I would have to pay for water separately. They would just send me a bill, I think? I'll confirm with my agent when I pick up my keys.

Depending on the age of the apartment, you may not have choice over the electricity/gas provider. Most newer apartments have "embedded utilities".

    • I guess I would need to ask the building manager first which providers are available in the building. Thank you for the advice I didn't think this would be an issue!

When buying a fridge and mattress/bed ask about delivery dates and check any access issues to the apartment in advance.

Talk to the landlord or owner especially if you need to use the lift or a fridge/stair climber.

Bonus tip: Fridge first then order food.

Get your Mail Redirected by AusPost, update your Drivers Licence Address and AEC and State Voting to new address and take out Contents Insurance, update your Car Reg address and Insurance address.

Also, apply for Local Council Parking Permits now if you don't have off-street parking assuming you have a Car.

    • Thank you these are some good tips! I will sort this all this out asap. I have a parking space but don't have a car so its not a priority for me to get a permit. Mainly will use it for visitors (which won't be often/a lot).

Check for TPG FTTB (Non-NBN Product) for internet.

Its cheaper and faster - 100Mbps/Unlimited/$59month

    https://www.tpg.com.au/fttb

    • Thank you for the recommendation, I'll have a look at this!

Would suggest not cheaping out on the mattress if possible. Buy new

    • I'm thinking of getting an ECOSA mattress and bed base. I've slept on an air bed for a while and then just recently a real bed that is already in the apartment so I really want to buy a proper mattress!

Which ever elec and gas you signing, consider cashback option from CR/SB if you Re going to live there for 6 months or more anyway. That way, even if you didn't get the best of the bestest plan, you are still ahead.

Last I checked my parents bill in Sydney, they were better off with AGL. I was with Energy Australia outside Sydney and they were okay. Their app is getting better, slowly.

Yeah that makes sense! My lease lasts for a year so maybe I'll wait for an Energy Australia cashback deal and sign up because I think that would be the cheapest for me for electricity + gas together. Really leaning towards more with Energy Australia atm.

do a search for energy on the govt sites to find best deals.
i use tangerine and they seem cheap.
    comparison sites work.

    • I checked energymadeeasy but it was only giving me GloBird and Simply Energy as a result(and they are expensive) compared to the results I got from wattever, I got ReAmped as the cheapest with Energy Australia included in the top of the list. So I thought of going with them instead!
