NBN 12 vs phone plan byo 5g/4g (iPhone as modem)?

Will move house. Optus has 500g 5g/4g for $65/month. Not sure will I get 5g in that new place yet. It is a phone sim only plan, I’m going to use a spare iPhone plugged in as the modem.

It has only opticomm no nbn, Aussie broadband offers $59/month unlimited. I have own modem router netcomm.

Only use torrent now and then, YouTube 1080p, web browsing, nothing 4K, don’t fuss with the download speed, it can take as long as it takes.

So? Which one is better? Speed wise

  • Are you a single person in the household? The speed will be affected once you start connecting more devices onto the iPhones hotspot. Range will also be an issue.

Doesn't optus offer a modem with that deal? Lte modems are pretty cheap. I would just purchase one and do it properly.

    • It is a phone plan, no modem. 5g modems are very expensive.

Optus 4G is likely to be faster, but speeds will fluctuate.
Can you live easily under the 500gb cap?
Cause fibre intent tends to be unlimited data these days.
Aussie Broadband allow you to build your own plan to save a few dollars. Price up their 500gb plan to compare.

    • Yes 500g is more than enough.

  • Unlimited slow home broadband plus 5G on your phone when you feel the need for speed, sounds good to me.

This is a bit off topic but only an iPhone 12 and newer can do 5G.

Free choice and all but isn't it a waste to use an iPhone 12 permanently as a modem?

    The Optus FAQ says:
"What speeds will I be able to get on Optus 5G Home Internet?

Speeds are variable on the Optus 5G Network. Your actual speed will depend on several factors including (but not limited to) congestion, location of the 5G modem in your house and proximity to an Optus 5G tower.

We’re confident you’ll be happy with Optus 5G Home Internet speeds and offer our customers the 50Mbps Satisfaction Guarantee (see below for details)."

Theoretical maximum speed of the 5G hardware inside of the iPhone 12 is 4Gbps.

    • It is a iPhone 12.

      • I’d be keen for this
I’ve been running the 200gb plan for the last 18 months and love it.

Can you post the link for the 500gb with iPhone 12?

  • Get 5G wireless for $60/ month.

    239Mbps

    It uses the Optus network

  • Ping will almost always be better on a wired line. If you don't game, then that might not matter much. We got by on wireless for a few years I think speedtest was around 14mbit/1mbit on a usb 4g dongle. It couldn't do any of the fancy stuff phones do like pairing up frequencies for better bandwidth

  • Negitives
    - Only works when you are home.
    - Manual intervention each time
    - Double/tripple NAT
    - Latency
    - Jitter
    - lightening impacted.
    - capped

    Positives
    - Good for people who get large data caps and have no use for them!
    - single bill
    - devices at home stay secure while you are out!
    - Speed++++ - even 4G compares well with 12Gbps.

Only good for a single user.

  • I’m getting 17mib/s download with slow 5g, that opticomm is practically useless with the 12/1 plan, it drops all the time.
