DJI Just Added to USA Blacklist of Chinese Companies

https://techcrunch.com/2020/12/18/dji-added-to-commerce-depa…

DJI was just added to the USA blacklist a few hours ago. DJI now joins Huawei and others being cut off from access to important USA technologies, such as Google maps which I think is crucial for DJI drones. I wonder what this means for all of us with DJI drones, will they be remotely bricked? I own a few DJI products but I also have a lot of criticism for China's manipulation of global markets, their human rights violations, the way they facilitated the exportation of Covid, how our Universities lowered the bar for all courses to sell our education to Chinese students, but most of all I despise how our leaders mortgaged our futures to China to make themselves and their inner city elites a few extra dollars in the short run.

I support this, even if it means no more flying the Mavic.

Comes back to yet another reason open source is critial.

Might not get the warranty or fancy features, but at this point in time I have zero concerns my drone will stop working due to external parties.

A lot of assumptions in the op but whatever. We have little DJI drone as well and as long as it still works I don't care what petty little games the worlds political class play.

  • The issue will be if the us admin wants the dji apps removed from the Apple and Google app stores

Then they can still be side loaded well for Android at least

Iin any case they call still be excluded from the US stores only and still be made available for all other regions

  • Never realised DJI is Chinese-owned O_O
The app, manual, and everything looks very western. I can't recall English writing in them that uses the usual Chinese font if you know what I mean.

  • This is great for innovation. The more sanctions the USA impose on other countries there more they will develop and adopt censorship resistant technology.

What's a private company got anything to do with what the Chinese government does?

Hahahaha. Yes, DJI totally has no affiliation with the Chinese goverenment.

  • such as Google maps which I think is crucial for DJI drones

Google can easy shut down the sanction by making the maps code open source.

Been on my blacklist ever since this:

It's one thing to have slack security, but threatening a researcher who points it out is where I draw the line. Believe I actually negged one of their deals here at the time to draw attention to it, but got overruled by the community.

  • Why are all the best products made by evil corporations ☹️

  • GOOD!

big name CHinese companies trying to break out in the west should be sanctioned.
