Xbox Series X Vs Spending More on a PC?

Hi guys,
I was planning on upgrading to Xbox series X but then found myself wondering, should I just cough up more for a PC? And how much more is needed?

Pretty sure building a PC myself at the moment would be out of the question (disappointing I know), and have read through those “how does the XboxSX compare to a gaming pc for the price” sites and can see the value in Xbox, but the versatility of a PC is desirable, even if it would only be used for gaming and managing photos/music/phone web etc (not required for work or photo/vid editing).

For those more versed in the PC world, what would I be looking at for outlay on a PC that can handle 100+ FPS at 1080p or 1440 on games like call of duty?(probably only online game I play) I’m getting lost in research, so any advice on estimated cost would be great - likewise, if you know of any solid resources online to help evaluate different builds (feel like I’ve read heaps but am sure there are better ones out there) it would be really appreciated 👍🏻

Hard to tell you anything concrete right now with all the fluctuations in pricing and scalpers selling at high margins. They both have their benefits, and 100+ FPS at 1080p is easily achievable for probably around $1000 (rough estimate) once prices settle down. Remember that multiplayer is free on PC, so no subscription prices are required and you should take that into account. If you have any other games you'd like to play, that may effect the cost. You'll also need peripherals, whereas Xbox comes with that included. Honestly, the Xbox is looking quite appealing right now once they're available and it comes with everything to get started.

    • Yeh thanks man I would happily spend maybe $2k for a PC so good to know I wasn’t too unrealistic
I’ve got a good monitor and decent kB&m but unsure if I’d move to kB&m or use a controller (can I shift after 20+ years of console play? Lol)

Lets see, the new Xbox Series X is about $750 (if you can get one). For the same money you can get an RTX 3060 TI right now. There hasn't been any direct comparisons, but i'd say it would be 30%-50% faster than the xbox (hopefully others can weigh in here). It will definitely run COD 1440P @120hz maxed out no problem. But then you have to account for the rest of the components.

    • CPU Ryzen 3600 - $300
    • Mobo B550 - $150 ish
    • RAM 16GB - $100
    • 1T SSD - $140
    • PSU - $120
    • Case - $100

These are the best bang for buck components around and I don't recommend going lower. So you're another $1000 or so out of pocket to go PC.

CPUs, Mobos and definitely GPUs are expected to come down in price in the next few month as stock goes back to normal levels. You might be paying an extra $300-$400 or so if you want to get this spec now.

What are you gaming on now? Can you wait?

Another alternative if you don't need super powerful computer for video editing or machine learning and you're only playing COD, is to get a refurbished dell optiplex and stick a low profile 1660 in it This combo is about 1/3 of the performance for under 1/3 of the price.

    • Hmm that’s pretty appetizing, I’ll keep a keen eye on prices over the next few months. I’m gaming on an Xbox one (OG 😂) so am very much in need of an upgrade. With Xbox out of stock and gaming pc components high, it’s the WFH stock market 😬
Good to know those sort of specs wouldn’t be an unreal price point, I mean I k of the sky is the limit with gaming PC and parts (having looked at the top line GPUs, one can dream!)

I'd say a 3060Ti is probably more on par with a series X. A 3600 is definitely less powerful than a Series X CPU.

  • Both. Do the series x now because that hardware won't change for years and the price will barely change too. You're only alive once and if gaming is your biggest hobby then both a gaming PC and a series x is still cheaper than plenty of other hobbies, like holidaying or skiing or racing etc.

    • If you're getting both a console and PC you're better off with a PS5 because of the exclusives. Pretty much everything on Xbox One (including Xbox GamePass) is also available on PC and I expect the same with Series X.

      • Playing on PC just isn't fun sometimes. On xbox you just press start on the game and you're done. A mix of all three is best, PS, Xbox, and PC. Or a mix of all five if you add mobile and Switch. Buying things makes people happy anyway.

        • Xbox PS and PC Wowee
I do love Xbox gaming but I guess I’m conscious of my life events and reality of sitting at the tv and gaming..more likely to get by in a study environment

          • @original15: I must admit I don’t actually game much, usually just one or two of the biggest titles per year per platform. I like knowing they are there and that I can buy any game I read about whenever I want. Living life knowing you're missing out on the Sony side of your hobby, or the Xbox side, or the PC side of it just blows. You only live once and each console costs just a few hundred dollars really. Plus you sell it when the next one comes out, so cost of ownership is even less than it appears, and you always own the new ones.

            • @AustriaBargain: Yeh I had the Xbox game pass for a while but did I really take advantage of it..there are only a few games I see myself playing, cod with the boys, GTA (whenever that comes..), RDR2, the Harry Potter game etc. hence thinking, if you’re going to drop $800 on a console, could I drop double or more for a gaming device that also serves as PC for other misc tasks

If only Microsoft would allow Windows 10 to be installed on a Series X, then the decision would be so easy.

  • If you were going to buy $1000 pc anyway then it's worth making that into gaming pc by adding GPU (like $500-700).

If you only want to spend like $500 on pc for non-gaming use, then console might be a better choice.

    • Yeh I’m sort of thinking spending $750 is a given so therefore what additional outlay makes it worth it from a PC perspective 👍🏻

  • I have an older PC with an i7 8700k and a GTX 1070. I bought a Series X instead of upgrading and the Series X stomps all over my PC except in load times for some reason? It still loads quick though and quick resume (when it works) makes getting back into a game almost instant.

The worst thing about the console is that playing games like Doom Eternal with a controller feels awful compared to a keyboard and mouse combo. I hope they offer more KB/M support for Series X games. Also, it has no optical audio out like the old Xboxes so if you have audio delay issues with your sound setup it will drive you nuts.

    • Have you tried hooking up a mouse and keyboard? Pretty sure it can be done since the Xbox One and that Doom would be a title to allow it.

EDIT: Doom is not a title to support mouse and keyboard controls on console. Cmon Bethesda!

    • Was playing original doom on Xbox last night 😂
      Did feel awkward 😬

  • I was in a similar situation, for me to build a pc with the specs I wanted I was looking around 1.5K
So I decided to get the Xbox for half that.
Have a pc for work already etc.
One of the massive bonuses with Xbox is the game pass which makes gaming a lot more affordable - this of course is available on pc as well
