Top Loader Recommendations (Washing Machine)

Yay. So last week we had to replace our fridge. Now today our F&P washing machine has dropped dead, no power. I pulled the control panel off and there is a large yellow plastic controller unit that has power going in but nothing coming out. Given the age it's probably not worth spending money on so was wondering what a decent brand would be these days? Up to $1500, preferably less, 8-9 kg capacity. Are they all computer controlled these days or do some still have the old mechanical rotary dial?

Cheers

I went for an LG 10kg https://www.lg.com/au/washing-machines/lg-WTG1034WF for less than $900 delivered. The drum appears to be no different in size to the 14kg model in this range. It's got more than 50% greater capacity than our previous Simpson 9.5kg.

Pretty impressed overall but the water level sensing feature is absolutely useless; you do need to manually program the water level or your clothes will end up barely damp so LG can maintain good creds on water efficiency.

  • I am like you.

    I want :

    • Top loader.
    • Mechanical dials with zero electronics.
    • Water saving / keep rinse water option.

I have always used the Simpson ones, unfortunately they do not make those anymore and we are all exposed to 'motherboard replacement' .

I am using the EZI ones now.

There is one American model which is totally mechanical but it is huge and expensive.

Have a LG top load for over 10yrs, 8.5kg ver.
    It is full digital control.
It has been perfect and still like new, used 3-4 times a week.
Make sure any washing machine is installed stable and perfectly level. Also dont skimp by using a low water level, use plenty of water, best for the machine and the wash.

    • Cheers. You don't trust the auto water level system?

  • Just bought an LG and it works like a charm. Auto water level and all. Got it from these guys. Cheap as chips.

Free delivery and removal of old machine.

  • While we're at it can anyone recommend a surge protector? I know there's a lot of the them out there that don't apparently do much so if someone can recommend a decent one that would be much appreciated. :)

  • Get another F&P, this is the 10kg model I recently got, and it is $1399 at the Good Guys ATM

  • why top loader?
I find toploaders tend to wreck my clothes sometimes in the first wash.

If you like to load from the top but want more water /energy efficient solutions then there are "European top loaders" with horizontal drums, but is probably difficult to find in AU.

Not enough room in the laundry for a front loader. :)

      • the top loading horizontal drum mashine that I have used had even smaller footprint that most if not all regular toploaders that I have seen.

Just saying, if I had to buy toploader I'd make an effort to source the horizontal drum version. Have lost too many expensive shirts (if a $30 shirt is reduced to look like a $5 shirt in one wash it adds s up quickly) aso to regular toploaders.

Oh well, too late now. :) We've never had any destroyed clothing from a TL and the one we got doesn't have an agitator so maybe that was the cause of your issues?
