eBay or PayPal Protection for Sold Item That Goes Missing in The Post

Hi All,

I know I will get more sense here, then if I contact Ebay or Paypal directly.

Had a sold Ebay item go missing via tracked Australia Post (Item Value $200).

Is there any protection to cover this from Ebay or Paypal?

Postage label purchased via Ebay.

I believe Australia Post has $100 cover for items that go missing, but that does not cover the actual cost of the item in this case.

Any info appreciated.

(I am guessing my parcel got stolen, and is probably now wrapped and sitting under someones Christmas tree :(

you have the option of purchasing postage insurance, you didn't … neither ebay or paypal will cover you

    • To be clear this is if OP is the seller. Which isn't clear from their post.

      • Pretty sure they are the seller, otherwise, gow would the buyer know the label was purchased via ebay - tracking is generic auspost regardless.

Why not just report it to ebay/paypal as not arrived.

  • Postage label purchased via Ebay.
I believe Australia Post has $100 cover for items that go missing, but that does not cover the actual cost of the item in this case.

There is a option to have extra coverage for items when creating a postage label.

As the 'seller' you'll have to refund the buyer and then go claim from auspost.

Yes you'll be out $100, thats the risk you take.

  • This is why you should pay for the extra insurance. A lot of sellers offer it to the buyer, but it's really seller it protects.

AusPost offer insurance of up to $100 for tracked items. Extra insurance can b purchased, but be warned, for insurance claims over $100 they will only reimburse the cost price of the item (not your sale price) and they will ask for evidence of your purchase cost

      • What if I’m selling something I didn’t purchase brand new with a receipt? Maybe something I made myself for instance?

  • You wont get anything from Auspost. Their standard parcel insurance of $100 only applies if the item is valued $100 or below.

    • Where did you get that from? If that is correct then it makes no sense really.

If the buyer lodges a successful INR claim (and they usually are) they will have their payment refunded and you will be out of pocket as well as losing the item.

There's little or no protection for sellers on eBay, nowadays it's a scammers paradise.

Does tracking say it was "delivered" though? There are things you can do, but your post is too vague.

  • Always sell with tracking, only way to cover yourself as private seller.
Only sell items that are worth people buying the the tracked shipping.
For $200 sale crazy not to offer tracked shipping. Buyer scam potential through the roof. Big sellers have it built into their prices that quite a few buyers will claim not received even if it's not the case, as individuals we must take all precautions.

  • Are you the seller or the buyer? If you are the buyer, just open an ebay claim for it not having arrived. If unsuccessful you can then open a PayPal claim.

If you are the seller and the buyer opens a claim, you're out of luck. You could have bought insurance, but it is generally agreed that the cost outweighs the benefit overall, and it is better to "self insure" ie suck it up when something bad happens.

  • Why ive started using eBays Sendle service, you'll see the option top right corner in eBay page item is sold then hit "print postal label" eBay Sendle insurance is up too $300 and usually cheaper postage most times around $5-$7 cheaper and there just as fast depending on the postal route sometimes faster, had an item Melbourne to Queensland in 4 days
