New Drive-in 'Cinema' in Melbourne

I noticed a report today that Melbourne is to get a new (indoors) drive-in 'cinema', to be located within Jeff's Shed (Melb Convention & Exhibition Centre).
Drive your car in, along with up to 173 other cars, pay $49/car, grab some food from a food truck, watch a film day or night, drive out again. No booze, no reverse parking, large cars at the back, smaller at the front.
No details about how the sound will be transmitted.

It doesn't appeal to me; I doubt the vibe would be there, and getting out would not be very easy from there.
Does this appeal to you?

That price seems insane for a sub-par cinema experience for two.

    • +2

      For five?

      • +6

I can get 14 into our old hiace

        • +1

          Can I come?

        • You can do better than that! The record for a classic Mini is 27!

      • Is the screen low enough that the rear seat passengers can see properly?

        • +1

Probably not; they certainly won't have the 'humps' to park on to get the best view

        • Everyone looks through the back window?

          • @netjock: No reverse parking allowed

            • +1

@GG57: LOL they do allow that in Coburg.

Anyways if vans park at the back then probably could see out the front. Just seems very far I guess.

As someone that frequents the coburg drive in, this definitely doesn’t appeal to me.

    • No wind, no rain and probably not as cold on a cold night in the shed.

      • It is (initially) only for a couple of months in Summer apparently.

      • +1

Drive-ins in the rain are actually quite fun, especially if it’s a scary movie. Thunderstorms with lightning are even better.

The cold can be annoying but I do tend to be flexible with my plans. If it’s too cold I won’t go and I’ll pick another night.

And wind is irrelevant if it’s normal wind. You’re inside your car. When it’s really gusty, it can be loud but it’s not a dealbreaker.

Going by that price you'll only see Toorak Tractors there.

So all at the back then.

Brings back memories, I felt nostalgic for a minute or so remembering the original drive-ins.

3 or 4 carloads of us plus a couple of mates in the boot. Eskys full of beer, and off to the midnight horror movies to create mayhem.

Then remembering to remove the speaker before driving out.

I'll pass, too much water under the bridge.

    • I watched Godzilla in the rain. And the bulb on the projector was so weak that the image already looked too dark. But at least you could hear it properly, usually.

    Nup.
I liked the old ones too much.
    Let's start a sub-thread; your best driven-in movie memories…

Can I take a mini bus?

    • The sight-lines would be my concern (for the passengers).

  • +3

Bit steep but also comes with free carbon monoxide, so evens out a bit.

  • +3

Sound would probably come from your car stereo FM band. Coburg uses FM band radio.

    • They should use digital so that everyone's sound is slightly out of sync. Gotta love the echo.

My entitled child could not see the movie because our Cayenne was directed to park behind a Range Rover Autobiography. My optional Burmester audio upgrade cost $17000 and the 2 channel audio broadcast on FM 93.8 was less than desirable. Do not recommend.

    • Love this!

  • +2

How the hell are they going to police the no booze policy?

  • +5

Rather move my TV into the garage

    • +1

or move my garage into the living room

Pretty sure Lunar Drive-In in Dandenong is $30 per car load, so yeah nah

  • +3

Hope they’ve got good ventilation. Last time i went to the drive inn, morons kept starting & idling their cars during the film

    • So no cold nights and no hot nights then?

  • HAHAHAHA how big is this shed?
To accommodate so many vehicles, a shed this size would have a number of supporting beams. Don't you think this would be like viewing a distant scenery through a forest?
Who wants to eat from the truck?

    • +1
    • The shed is reasonably big (70,000sq.m. total) but they are only using part of the 39,000sq.m. pillarless exhibition space for the drive-in.

  • I say go for it! Let the crazy continue as we leave 2020😜

  • +1

Meh, there are cheaper ones around (one in Dandy for less than $40 IIRC). Also not too sure about the logistics of a closed shed and car exhaust lol much prefer the vibe of open drive win cinemas (specially for that nostalgia feel)…

Wish there was a modern drive in cinema using digital radio or internet radio (get on phone transmit to car by BT or android auto) as the old school FM audio transmitters do show a bit of audio deficiency on newer cars hehe

  • I imagine that at least a few OzB members, or perhaps one of your parents, would have been conceived at the drive-in.

Certainly was the place to go, in the days before permissive parents. 👍
