UVC Phone Sanitisers / Box

Hi guys,

Looking to get phone sanitisers as xmas presents, but the one I had in mind (PhoneSoap) probably won't arrive in time.

From my research, the PhoneSoap has been tested by independent parties - whilst not 100% effective, seems to does what it says on the tin.

Some of the more readily available products in the Australian market don't provide any convincing proof their products do anything.

Has anyone come across any of these UVC devices that has been tested (e.g. lab tests, dosimeter cards) by a third party?

    Why?

    • It's a gift for some germaphobe friends :)

      • Give them the gift of common sense, and tell them not to worry about it.

  • Unless you share your phone with people who practice poor hygiene standards I can't see why you'd need to do this, or am I missing something.

Save $80 and buy some alcohol wipes instead.

    • Most boxes are multi-purpose. You can sterilise things like keys, glasses, etc.

Money is not an issue, it's a gift.

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-PhoneSoap-3-UV-Smartphone-Sa…
and you can choose express shipping to get it by 23rd of December

And also remember to hand in your ozbargain badge if you buy this

        • Hahahahahahaha oh wow. Do people actually spend near $300 on a UV light in a box? This makes those apple headphones look reasonable.

          • @brendanm: Yeah lol
Never was interested in these items, I just use antibacterial wipes when I want to clean my phone etc

  • I also would use alcohol wipes on keys and glasses etc., if I thought they were infested with harmful germs and save near $250 each - as all good OzBargainers would do.

I recall Aldi selling a phone sanitiser although when I last saw it in-store, it was on clearance and there were quite a few available.

Homedics provides UV-clean efficacy test results based on data from third-party labs for their two sanitiser products.

Yes they had it for @$30.
Otherwise there was the Samsung which I mentioned on this site previously.

      • Ahhh - the Samsung is also a charger so similar functionality to the PhoneSoap but not as exxy.

      • From my research, this model doesn’t emit UVC, but wavelengths in the UVA/B range so isn’t as effective as UVC.

    • The problem with the Aldi or generic ones are the lack of information about whether it’s lab tested. There are fake boxes out there too, where the leds don’t even emit UV.

Homedics is a trusted brand, but I would have liked to have seen reviews where they’ve taken swabs off the phone and shown the results. The lab reports are often commissioned by the manufacturer and conducted in lab somewhere in China.

  • Wouldn’t the uv rays cause the plastics on the device to degrade over time? Eventually making it more likely to break and fall apart?

    • If you were to believe the marketing, it wouldn’t harm the phone, but I guess there will be degradation over time to anything plastic - similar to leaving the object in the sun.

I think the level of UVC emitted by these sanitisers are also quite low by design, sufficient to kill the germs and not cook your devices.

Also aren’t a lot of phones full metal nowadays, so less of an issue?

  • Glass mostly now but still has an affect on the adhesive. I think just wiping it over with a bit of spray and wipe would probably be better or just putting it in a zip lock bag when I go out

  • Samsung has a wireless charger that also does UV sterilising or something like that, does this fit your bill?

And I think their shipping was good. That said, it wasn't during this time of the year, so ymmv.
