I've been using Schwarzkopf Brilliance for years, colouring my hair myself to cover greys and because it's much cheaper than getting it professionally done.
The last three time I've found its not working as well even when concentrated near the roots, and the overall colour is washing out really quickly. It never used to do this.
Looking for recommendations on a permanent box job that sticks, especially for greys! Thanks.

For men, grey = distinguished. For women, grey = old. I wish it wasn't the case, I HATE getting my hair coloured!
You're old, going grey is what happens.
I was having that problem with every single box colour I bought, no matter which brand it was. I found I was colouring my hair more often than the 4-6 weeks that the box suggested, and spending way more money as a result. So I decided to go to the salon, and spoke to my hairdresser, who ended up adding something (can't remember what she called it, but you could ask) into the colour mix to make it "stick", and it works! I got mine coloured over 3 weeks ago, and the only thing that looks different are the short strands of grey regrowth, which are barely noticeable. I don't know how grey you are (if it's just a few strands, or all of your regrowth) but it might be worth asking at the salon. In the long run, you might not end up spending as much as you think, since it should last longer.
Also, for what it's worth, I've started rinsing with apple cider vinegar (mixed with water) between my shampoo and conditioner, and not only has my colour stuck around, I don't get a dry scalp anymore. Might be worth trying, regardless of which colour option you go with. Apparently it's good for coloured hair - seals the strands, or something. Either way, it seems like it's working for me. :)
Thanks for your suggestions!
you know young people are dying their hair grey at the moment.
i think grey hair can be nice. white hair is beautiful.
also couldn't you make it into highlights with temporary die or chalk?
I wish I could get away with white or purple/grey hair, but only young people can pull that look off. A 42 year old woman who is starting to get wrinkles is just going to look even older! ;)
Not in my opinion. A woman, of any age, that appreciates who she is and runs with it, has my respect and it is probably an indication that they have similar values to me.
I don't think they look any older than they would with coloured hair.Maybe it depends on the woman? I know I feel a lot more confident in myself when I feel that I look good. And grey hair looks awful on me! I've never had a nip and tuck, or lips filled, or b00bs lifted, so if hair colour is the only way I'm changing the "real" me, then I'm ok with that. :)
I'm agreeing with everything you're saying on here!
Thanks for your thoughts :) I'm looking for low maintenance options, hence the permanent colour.
Don't ask Rudy!
Pretty sure there's more spent on R&D into Viagra than hair colourings.. lol
I found box dyes weren't the same (long lasting or richness of colour), and now go to my hairdresser every 6wks.
I had someone comment on my hair colour-they asked me what colour it was and I replied 'grey'. They looked at me and asked if i had it done at salon. Told them I just waited until i was old enough!
Try Hair for Men
Use anti intruder paint
Suggest trying clarifying shampoo prior to colouring your hair as it is meant to remove any product build-up & allow for better and more even colour take.
You can also try dry shampoo so that you don't wash your hair as often.
A suggestion for reducing colour fade is to use a colour deposit shampoo. De Lorenzo Novafusion range is quite good & an Australian company!
Try John Frieda. It’s slower to fade than other brands and the colours are true to the pictures. More expensive than other brands at full price, but comes on special at the supermarket from time to time.
never understood the panic of going grey.. happens to everyone eventually. Big Deal.
