Is AppleCare Plus Worth The Money?

For a $500 Ipad is it worth spending $100 for AppleCare+ for a ten year old school girl?
Ipad is going to be used in school and home.
Update: It is contained in a tough case with lot of cushion.

Oh totally she will smash the screen guaranteed, probably even twice, my partner smashed her iPhone twice, second time actually it was run over by many cars at a busy intersection and Apple fixed it

  • Absolutely

  • Depends if your kid likes to leave on things on table edges (and half hanging out) and mishandle her belongings, or she takes great care of her belongings.

Regardless, get a tough case that gives good drop protection.

EDIT: saw your update re: tough case.
If price to protection costs 5:1 doesn't appear balance, buy the more expensive iPad instead :D

  • Yes, for the peace of mind if it gets damaged which is very possible. They'll replace it straight away.

  • I had this same dilemma recently with my new iPad Air. If it was damaged to the point where you needed to have the screen or internals fixed, how unhappy would you be that you didn’t get AppleCare? As with all insurance, you hope that you don’t need it. Until you do

Why not put all those Apple Care payments into a new or better insurance policy that covers everything you own?

  • From my experience, it doesn't matter how good the case is, a sharp pointed impact force will penetrate the tough case and break the screen (ipad or macbook).

    source: frequent applecare+ flyer :(

  • Do the math on probably breakage vs claiming against your own insurance. My contents insurance covers electronics, even if stolen from my car or desk in a library. There's an excess, but iPhones and Iphones are creeping over $2,000 each for the pro models with most storage.

Plan ahead for these losses and breakages, make sure you have enough iCloud data across the family for everyone to make a complete backup of absolutely everything they'd want to keep. When she drops her ipad into the ocean, she'll be able to download everything that was on it at the latest backup point which would have been automatic that same morning when charging at home.

    • The cost to add my $1200 iPhone to my home and contents insurance was about $60 with a $100 excess.

It's covered for loss/theft as well as damage unlike apple care which covers damage only. I'd recommend investigating adding it to insurance instead of paying for apple care.

If I'd bought apple care on my iPhone it was going to cost $199 for 2 years with a either $45 (screen only) or $149 excess with no theft coverage. Bad deal.

      • I think the only reason to recommend apple care is if you need the support, if your grandmother calls you up a lot for tech support she could be calling the apple care support line instead. Most of us here would be geeky enough to never need to call tech support or have an apple guy show us how to do something in person. We just know how to do it or can search it online in seconds.

From my 5 years of selling I.T and Visual at JB hi-fi yes it is, no matter what case your kid has on it they find a way still to destroy them.

  • catalyst sells waterproof and drop proof case up to 2 meters, cost about the same

I have had Apple products since '93 and never have I purchase any "Apple Care"… but have simply rang many times Customer Care to discuss various issues.
To answer your question, NO, not worth it.
Possibly in your House Contents Insurance, you are already covered!

Add portable valuables cover to your insurance. $100 excess
