1kg ALDI Lazzio Coffee Beans from Honduras or Colombia $13.99 @ ALDI

164

This is an everyday deal available in SE Melbourne that I know of and maybe elsewhere IDK?

Very cheap beans roasted in Melbourne, I have tried both and you get what you pay for. If all you want is a cheap coffee then these fit the bill. Tasts wise they are drinkable but I've had better albeit at a much higher price tag.

it's not too bad for the price

    • +1

Hahaha. That's the best user name, especially for this post. I agree going to a local coffee shop and buying 1kg of beans is better but costs 3-4x as much.

      • check out this article ..

Even food critic chose Aldi coffee :)

        • +11

I like the ALDI beans, I'm going through medium dark at the moment. They are unbeatable bang for the buck.

I prefer my local coffee beans but they are definitely not 3-4x better.

        • Even food critic chose Aldi coffee :)

Do they pick it to criticise?
I always believed that's what critics do. :)))

        • +3

the food critic isn't a coffee expert though. I haven't had the Aldi coffee, but a big part of what you're usually paying for in specialty beans from a local roaster is sustainability and traceability, which means paying coffee producers more money.

          looks like a sponsored post..

In the US, the UK and parts of Europe, an influencer is required by law to disclose a sponsored post. It will be a positive step when Australia follow suit.

        • Food critics actually have no idea about coffee let alone food lmao

  • -1

you get what you pay for

I would hope so, otherwise why would you pay…

One of the most ridiculous statements on a bargain site.

You mean if we charge you $59 a kilo for the same beans you will like them even more?

Try reading this from Stanford University

    https://news.stanford.edu/news/2006/january18/shiv-011806.ht…

    • +3

I read the article, I agree there is no difference(usually) between pills - brand name vs generic but coffee is a different ball game, expensive coffee normally comes from lower yield, higher altitude regions where it has grown slower and therefore has different(better?) flavours. Coffee also passes through many hands in the supply chain which can affect prices.

      • +5

No disputing that, what you are saying is

If you pay more you get better quality…

But the ridiculous part of the statement is that you dont necessarily get better value for the the extra price you pay.

And, if it as you say passes through many hands are they adding value or just adding cost.

        Which is better?

        a Coffee rated 7 out or 10 at $20
        Or
        A coffee rated 9 out of 10 at $30

Saying you get what you pay for means nothing if you cant discern the difference, whereas if you can it means a lot.

Thank you for discussing the points while others just vote down without understanding the point being made. I guess they must be those who must have the 9 out of 10 rated cups. 😀

This is rather dumb seeing as farmers are getting absolutely ripped off for their coffee crops in poorer countries and the price of coffee should actually be way higher than it is based of production and processing requirements but because of slave labour we literally pay nothing for it. It will change in the next decade and the days of cheap coffeee will be gone forever and then you can complain about the price lmao but there really isn't a comparison between microlot coffees and ALDI they aren't in the same league at all. Instead of looking up studies on pill pricing and psychology (how irrelevant lmao) maybe look up what's happening with the dying coffee crops of the south americas due to climate change and having to grow at different altitudes or even completely different countries to maintain the correct climate and temperature range for the crop.

Tldr people are jokers for complaining about the price of speacialty coffee because the farmer is getting a bigger cut but still getting underpaid for the work they do. Continue to support buying coffee from ALDI where the farmer is getting absolutely cut out of the profits and ripped off

I have tried both and you get what you pay for.

I'm glad someone admits it. I get downvoted big time for saying it. There are better options out there.

    • +4

Their older single origin selections were better. I've found the current two pretty average no matter what method of brewing I used and therefore buying online.

      • +1

Yep that's been my experience too.

      • +2

They are seasonal (fresh).. Current season is Colombian/ Honduran. Brazilian is the best coffee bean out of everything bean I have ever tried (available in our winter). I think this is the 'Aldi bean' that everyone raves about.

Brazilian Tasting notes - Choc/ Toffee

Vs the current which I think are floral/ citrus.

        • -1

Brazilian = generic Melbourne coffee. Maccas, Gloria jeans etc

    • Better options out there for the same price? Genuinely interested in your suggestions on this - love to try beans that I've never had before!

      • Like to try beans? Well have you seen these guys? I subscribe and every month is totally different. Some are bad like the fermented beans we got but most are ok or good. https://www.threethousandthieves.com

        • That's $50 a kg, you'd better hope the beans are amazing

        • +1

Thanks! I'll give em a look

          • @supersaverdude: If you get 2*250g then you can email them and ask them to change the order to one filter beans, one espresso beans so you get two different coffees each month. This may available in the sign up now IDK but it wasn't when I signed up.

      • +3

Not at all in the same price range but I buy from https://beanbay.coffeesnobs.com.au/

Several beans to choose from and better than the options i've found in store at similar price points. Also very fresh.

      • I'm curious myself too.

    • +1

What's a better bean at similar price? If you willing to go to $30kg, yeah you can get better stuff. But nothing else near $13

      • That's exactly what I've asked. Though in saying that Manna have been good before.

        • I used to buy from manna before I switched to aldi beans. Manna are better, but not enough for me to spend $30kg vs $13kg

          • @Pacify: Aldi aren't a nationwide chain so if I want the $13kg price range I have to settle with Coles/Woolies thanks to COVID and not being able to fly around the country like I normally would. Still I think the Aldi beans before were a lot better than how they are now.

      • I find Coles brand beans at similar price better then Aldi's Lazzio

    • -1

also more ethical, traceable and sustainable options too.

In an informed and abundant society our dollars shouldn't support anything less

  • +1

I've bought both before, , after recently coming into ownership of a breville espresso machine. the honduras in particular I quite liked.

I think either of these are a lot better than the Woolworths version https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/300452?

I know more expensive beans from posh roasters in melbourne will probably turn a better coffee, but for 13$ its pretty hard for me to go past the aldi ones. especially for milk drinks

    • Damn $12 for a kg, now that's cheap!

      • -5

I wouldn't even recommend for a coffee enema

        • +1

          tried grinding the beans first?

    • Avoid dark roast.

  • +8

    Isn't this their normal price?

    • -4

It's the regular price but for people that don't know about it - I say everyday price. Still a bargain.

    • +2

This has always been their normal price.

    • 14.99 in QLD I believe. Great value! Where has Brazil gone? Not seen for ages

      • isn't aldi same price australia wide?

      • +1

Brazil stay the same place next to Peru… don't think we have a powerful earthquake that move Brazil away… XD

  • +2

Before others do: How much are they usually?

    • -3

It's the regular price but for people that don't know about it - I say everyday price. Still a bargain.

    • +3

good attention to detail in replicating JV

    • +3

by others you meant JV … it's ok you can say it, don't need to be PC when it comes to JV :P

      • +1

Am I supposed to be able to work out what JV means, or do I need to go to urban dictionary?

        • +2

you don't find JV, he finds you

        • I think the question is, is this is on special, reduced, discounted or is this just ordinary, regular, everyday rrp that the retailer has set which you are now advertising for.

  • -1

    barely drinkable

    • Do you drink it black?

      • -5

User name and profile would suggest so…

      • Yes

  • +5

The Colombia blend is very good at this price. Reckon you have to pay at least $25/kilo elsewhere to find coffee that is noticeably better.

    • +1

Yep, this is spot on. Although probably makes a better black coffee than a milk one. For espresso / long blacks nothing close for the price.

  • Anyone tried the season blends, I thought they were a step up BUT are $5.99 for 250g. I had run out of coffee with an order on the way so was perfect

  • +1

    Coffee snobs get ITT!

I've had some good $10/kilo beans before.

    • Like what?

      • Can't remember the name, $10 a kilo roasted in Italy picked it up in the international section at Coles.

  • +1

Normal price, but to me they seem like the best budget coffee beans available - better than any other big store beans, and almost a little worse than $30kg beans from speciality roasters

  • +2

I tried their Peru beans and they were awful. Too sceptical to try these. Believe they're roasted by Veneziano, but could be wrong

    • +3

      Colombia is notably better.

      • I'll check it out

  • +1

    This is RRP

  • I just started espresso coffee at home and started with the Macro Organic Fairtrade Coffee Beans Medium 200g for $6 from Woolies and it was "nice" according to me.
Changed to these Aldi beans and oh my better tasting in my opinion and bang for buck. 1kg - $12
This was eye opening. I will give try to some local roasters but as a beginner appreciate coffee, the Aldi came out much better.

    • Where are you located?

  • Going through some Aldi coffee beans right now because I forgot to order some good ones. They're fine if you add milk. I don't like black coffee with them though.

However, what Aldi do have going for them is that they're actually somewhat fresh, unlike some of the horrors I've tried from Coles/WW. I'm guessing their turnover is pretty high on them, so that by default makes them better than anything else available at a supermarket.

    • Yep, definitely the biggest selling point, generally no where near as stale as other supermarket coffees

  • Have tried a few types of Aldi coffee beans and for the price they are good enough for the office.

If these are on sale… https://coffeeworkswarehouse.com.au/collections/coffee-beans…
Then I get my beans from there, Boomer's Kick is great (arabica/robusta blend) mmm.

  • +1

If this is RRP am I allowed by guidelines to downvote?

  • I dont know. I used to spend $40-60 per kg on beans..(St.Ali, Axil and others…) and these are either equal if not better than those.
Really happy with the Aldi beans

  • +3

    I have tried it, not that good;

  • -1

Coles brand urban dark roast are better. These beans lack flavour imo, no bitterness at all.

    • +2

      You want bitterness?

      • I drink dark roast espresso, I like a slight bitterness. When it's not there coffee doesn't taste right, rather acidic.

        • I work my moka pot to avoid burning my coffee and making it bitter. I consider any coffee that requires sugar to be too bitter. I can't say I have ever noticed acidic taste in any coffee though. Maybe I am not sensitive to it.

        • Acidity in coffee is desired bitterness is not. There actually apart of same thing and your talking about under or over extraction

          • -1

@bargone: You need balance, both acidity and bitterness. Not too much of either. These beans were lacking body.

    • Bitter just means its stale

  • I don't care how cheap it is. I'd rather pay more and be confident that I will have something drinkable. I wouldn't buy coffee from Aldi for use with espresso machines. I do buy their beans for cold brew however.

    • I'm a huge coffee snob, no idea how you could call aldi's beans undrinkable.

      • I'm a coffee snob myself and aldi coffee was not drinkable, at least the one I bought wasn't. It was obviously very stale as I had to dial my grinder down to very fine setting and it was still pouring out like waterfall. Not much aroma to the coffee as well. No matter what I did, I couldn't get this coffee to brew at the correct timing. I don't bother with cheap coffee that does not have roasting date stamped on the packet.

I don't buy online either. Buying online has been bit of a hit and miss. Now I just go to my local Merlo and buy freshly roasted beans. They give you free coffee when you buy beans as well.

  • -1

No thanks. Only buy Australian Products.

  • +1

Shit beans. Shit coffee and this isn't OZRRP.

  • Can’t stand the medium or dark roast. Yuk.
The single Origin coffee is nice, good value there.

  • I went through a 2year phase of buying everything from blue Mountain Jamaican (most expensive) to the north qld local growers /roasters. Switched to the Aldi 2 years back and I was pretty impressed. I found over a year about 1 in 5 where old/stale in in Brisbane so could be a supply from Melbourne issue. It's a shame they didn't print a roast date on the bag. I've moved back to the Byron Blue @ 37/kg.I can get it at my local within 2 weeks of roasting. I still get an Aldi bag every now and then. If you get a fresh bag, extracted properly it's a bloody good coffee. Just my opinion, I'm in no way a coffee expert just an enthusiastic consumer.

  • I'm liking these Aldi beans. All good is my rating. Seems to me IMHO Aldi's premium lines are worth the extra money. I don't buy much from Aldi but I bought a Xmas ham (the premium line) and it was great, would buy again over all the hams at the local deli.

Oh, their "Champ" choc milk is great.
