Fast Charging Options with Android Auto

I have recently took Kia Cerato Sedan MY18 which has the option of Android auto and Apple carplay. It has a single USB port to which I need to plugin my phone to use Android auto.

However, I have started noticing that the battery in phone discharges quickly with Android auto on and USB cable charging is not enough to charge it.

So, I am thinking of options to enable fast charging in my car so that I have enough charge left on my phone for long trips.

Upon checking, I found two options:

  1. Using a 12v cigarette car charger with USB ports to connect to a wireless charging Pad. Connect the phone to Android auto USB port and place the phone on wireless charging Pad for wireless charging.

  2. Using power enhancer USB Y cables with two male and single female ports. That way, I can connect USB port from cigarette charger for fast charge with Android auto USB port for data sync and connect my phone into a female USB port of Y cable.

I am yet to try out both the options, but thought of checking here as many would have faced the same problem and keen to understand on the the solutions that are being used and working.

My phone is Samsung S10+.

Please share if there are any other better options available to have fast charging Along with Android auto use for navigation.

  • I had the same issue when I had my MY18 and ended up getting an Auto Electrician to run a dedicated circuit to a small 4 port USB hub under the dash and plugged in my wireless charger and other USB accessories through that.

    • Thanks for the reply. Roughly, how much it was costed?

  • About $100 from memory, including parts - it was a cashie so YMMV.

  • +2

That's a worry, I've never encountered that on the Toyota USB ports for AA. Must not have enough power? I dunno

    Tried changing cords?

I don't believe you can wireless charge while plugged into a recognised charging device (which it would recognise the car USB as). I think it's one or the other (have cars here with built in wireless charging, but the phone won't like it while plugged in)

    • Yeah. I have tried multiple ports which are able to fast charge from power socket. I think, wireless charging would work as many others are saying thats an option to have both fast charge and use AA.

  • We didn't have the same issue on our Kia Sportage MY2018 even though the USB port for AA is not fast charging. Perhaps your phone display is on while AA is running on your car? We have used either LG V20 and Samsung S9+.

    • No. Phone display is turned off while using AA. Not sure how it's working fine in Kia Sportage.

  • How significant is the discharge rate? My phone seems to discharge at a normal rate (i.e. the AA USB port provides just enough power to keep the battery at the same level, but not enough to charge it) while plugged in - Subaru.

    • Thats good to know. My battery percentage is dropping by 50% for a 2 hour trip when AA is turned on with maps and LTE for network signal.

      • That sounds like it's not charging whatsoever. I'd be inclined to quiz Kia about it
