What Would You Do with 5 Weeks off? (Travel/Overnight Stays Are Not an Option)

If you had 5 weeks off and couldn't travel, what would you do with your time?

I've spent my last few holidays doing home reno's, but that's finally coming to an end and I've been thinking about how to spend my time.

I'll share my plans as I'm the one posing the question.

I'm planning to:

  • Spend extra time with my son as it will just be us while my wife is still at work.
  • Finish off odd jobs around the house.
  • Deep clean parts of house that have been neglected.
  • Exercise heaps. I lost a lot of fitness in the last few months due to work demands etc. I love bike racing and can do that indoors with zwift.
  • Visit family
  • Improve myself academically. Either with skills related to my work or in an unrelated field that I'm interested in. At the beginning of this year I took a maths B course because I always regretted not doing it in high school. It was challenging and felt rewarding. I think progression is the spice of life!

Not really asking what you think I should do. I want to know, what would you guys do?

Take classes. Learn something new. Meet new people. Do volunteering. Stay away from internet.

Personally, doing the exact opposite of all these sounds good to me.

Solid recommendation on staying away from Internet, more specifically: pushed content (things others want you to see).

  • Depends. Do you have children?

    • +2

If not, then make children? :P

      • +7

And never have holidays again! :)

        • LOL.. that's so true! haha!

          I should've said.. . "practice" making children!

    • Yeah, I'm spending lots of time with my 3 year old amongst other things I have planned.

Just wondering what sort of things everyone else would do out of curiosity and also potentially to steal their ideas.

I've been dismantling old toys and gadget with my daughter and getting her to put it back again. She loves it.

        • Thats cool!

My little boy has been doing that with our lego advent calendar every days…sans the him putting it back together part.

Take up cycling. It's healthy, low impact and rewarding. Each time you can push your self a little further.

    Gym?
A lot of gym's allow you to buy 10 visits for $100 or similar.
Go every 3 days, stay for 2-3 hours and do whole body.

Throw a party > house gets damaged > more reno's

Read, exercise, gardening if you have the space, start a new hobby, learn a new language, build something for your kid, zoo / museum, cook something new

    • Great ideas! I've been thinking about practicing slow cooking/bbqing. My wife has so far been very supportive of my endeavours haha.

  • Get to know your local area better.

    Edit: disregard

    • +5

lol why did you disregard it? Is it because you found out I live in nambour? HAHA

I updated my original post with what my ideas are.

A lot of you guys must think along the same lines as me. Maybe we should all hang out at some point during the next 5 weeks ;)

Browse the internet, look for bargains and post it here :)

    • Pricehipster made that job redundant

  • Going to the gym

  • Learn and practice new cooking techniques or recipes

  • Do not have much idea about your personal interests. But, if I were you, I will

    1. Catchup on reading that I missed a lot
    2. Do some courses to improve my career prospects
    3. Do some scenic bush walking
    4. Visit beaches and museums
    5. Start exercising

See if you can find a temp job for that 5 weeks.

If you have a 3 year old at home it isn't really a holiday.

    Consider:
Getting a zoo membership, visit lots
    visits to the gallery
    visits to botanical gardens
Checking out all your local parks - find the great ones with water play areas
    Swimming lessons for the 3y.o
    Story time at the library

Good luck cleaning with a 3 y.o at home!
Run after your 3 y.o for exercise. Rinse, repeat

  • Your last point is something that I would do. Just focus on learning something new or upskilling in something.
