Port for M1 MacBook Pro?

Hey all,

Recently picked up a Macbook Pro (M1) in the sales and am upgrading from a late 2012 model.

I didn't realise the new Pro only has 2 Thunderbolt Ports.

With this in mind, I need a port extender / adaptor that can:

  • Take input of 2 x monitors (HDMI)
  • Be able to charge Macbook via port (I think)
  • Need 3 USB slots for Printer / Keyboard and Mouse dongles

I have researched and can't seem to find any that will support the above needs?

I have a Thunderbolt to USB Splitter already as well as 2 x Thunderbolt to HDMI adaptors.

I just can't figure it all out and am thinking surely someone else has had the same issue :|

Thanks a lot.

  • I am actually looking for a USB-C + power or Thunderbold+power dock.
    Any recommendations?
Is it worth paying the premium for thunderbolt?

Note, the Mac M1 chip only officially supports one external screen, unlike the intel Macs.
So you will need a custom software and or hardware to drive two external screens indepdently.

Doesn't help if you need to connect two external monitors though.

    • I guess that's what'll make the 16 inch Pro next year special, enough ports for four external monitors at once without any docks. Apple will put two M1X chips in it, if that's what it takes.

I have 4 USB ports on my macbook pro.

Get a wireless keyboard and mouse.
    I have this:

    I also have this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Baseus-7-in-1-HUB-USB-C-Type-C-P…

Get a USB C to HDMI, DP etc. adapter for the second USB port.

  • Satechi USB C hub. Pick one https://satechi.net/collections/usb-type-c

I thought the M1 only supported a total of two displays (ie, the laptop one and a single external).
I believe any further displays will need to be USB (which can be slow).

  • Dock or adaptor? I have the ThinkPad Thunderbolt Dock Gen1 and it's great. Got it in open box from mwave.

  • 2012 to M1, you have to tell us how much faster it feels.

  • I have Dell D6000 dock and it works fine with my m1 mac pro. To allow more than one external displays, you will need to install displaylink manager software. In general you would be looking on a usb-c docking station that support at least 60W power delivery and also DisplayLink certified.
