Carplay for Mercedes W205 2016

Hi all I was thinking of a way to integrate Apple CarPlay with my W205 model. I live in Sydney and I found a company called NaviPlus do all these integration without replacing the original OEM device.

Anyone used this sort of thing before ? They charge $1100 plus $400 to get it installed

  • You can install a later model radio and get the one experience, I did it on a w205 2015

    • where and how did you get it installed ? How much was the price ?

      • I did it myself using a second hand radio, all up total including a odb programmer was $900. This was a car with the Audio 20 radio rather than COMAND so it may be different for you.

Too much for a single feature upgrade that is Apple CarPlay. Get a new head unit ^ or wait for a new car.

  • Definitely worth it. CarPlay will surely be worth good money when you resell.

  • oem experience

  • Carplay is important to me as I would like to use the Google/Waze or Tomtom Maps which are all worth a lot for me rather than rely on my phone as a docking station and during summer hear the phone gets too hot and I am just destroying my phone.
I also want to use Spotify or even Apple music.

If I have navigation on can I have Spotify playing in the background with AIrplay ? I have never used Carplay and not even use if it uses my phone for a tethered wifi, bluetooth or always on lightening port connection ?

What are my options if it's not Naviplus or if it's Naviplus. I have 2015 COMAND package how do I get a newer entire set and what will it cost me ?

You can listen to music with any CarPlay app while navigating with waze/maps etc, press the media button and it will take you to the app currently playing music, press Navi to return to the navigation and music will still be playing.

I don’t understand your second question, the image in the car screen showing the CarPlay interface/apps is all computed and generated in the phone.

Naviplus just takes the CarPlay image from the phone and runs it into the car as a video stream from my understanding, whether it works seamlessly and with all the cars buttons depends on the programming in naviplus.

      • Thanks a lot. It makes a lot of things clear and I plan to get CarPlay installed.
Basically I want to know if I’m using Waze or Google navigation and listening to Spotify will that interrupt the voice over ? For example it’s giving me turn by turn direction speed camera warnings and constantly interrupting music. Is there a way around this situation? Also I wasn’t sure if I can click on Spotify during navigation select my music and the system automatically switches to Navigation.

        • It will act the same way the apps do on your phone, waze pauses the music when it gives directions. In the car I set waze to mute and keep an eye on the screen for directions so it won’t interrupt music.

          • @jimmytb: that's awesome thank you so much for all the tips and help. I really appreciate you answering all my silly queries.
How do you connect to Carplay is it wireless or by plugging it to your phone ? I also found out also from Navi plus that AUX Activator is important to have not the basic AUX to USB adapter which causes issues with the sound from outside noise / frequency interruption etc.
How do I know that the installer is installing the AUX activator not the AUX to USB ? I'm getting the installer to do everything from me even sourcing the equipment and warranty.

  • Any updates guys on the functionality of CarPlay?
