Prescription Glasses (High Power)

Hi,

I was recently looking to buy an extra pair of prescription glasses, however, I realised that with my current vision, I would need to to get thinner glasses than the standard offering.
The bare minimum that I was recommended by retailers was 1.67 index lens. The minimum price I could find at retail shops for a standard glass was around $250.
My current glasses were bought when I was overseas so that isn't an option anymore. I am not very confident buying $250 glasses online without trying them on.

I am currently in Syndey and would like to know if there were any value for money options here?

You can always earn $ but you only have 2 eyes.
Get a proper glasses from brick & mortar stores if you're not confident buying $250 online.
$250 in retail shop is usually $100ish online. Clearly and AusSpecs are good.
You can also find and try the model you want in store, then stack these two: 10% Cashback @ Zip & 25% off @ Specsavers
If you ask nicely, they may match their online price in store.

  • Get eye exam under medicare then shop your script around. I consider the extra price you pay at brick and mortar stores the cost of being able to try on and see what the glasses potentially look like. Otherwise just go window shopping and note down the model number/reference of the ones you like and then shop online with your script.

  • I'm in similar situation. Have needed high power prescriptions for most my life.

Frames are not hard to choose online, if you know the size you want. Frames have dimensions listed, showing you lens width, bridge width, temple length, and sometimes height. You can often pick up cheap frames (ie ebay) if you know what you're looking for. You can bring frames in store for them to fit lens.

For us the cost is mainly in the lens. If you can get frames and 1.67 high index lens for $250 from a brick mortar store, then I think that is a ridiculously good price (although I'm a bit suspicious). Otherwise take your prescription around and ask for quotes on the lens.

Take advantage of store promotions - ie OPSM has 20% off at least every two months.

I personally found Specsaver to have the worst quality frame (was a $299 frame) in my memory.
