PC Build Question around MSI 3070 Trio

Hi All,

I am looking for some help with building my PC for the first time - apologies if this has been answered but I have looked everywhere - but having little experience cant work out the best parts to complete my build. Cost if obviously a factor - but not the main one, I just want something that works well - pretty good value and will last a while.

I have already bought the following:
Case: Thermaltake P3
GPU: MSI 3070 Trio
PSU: 750W

I am looking at motherboards, CPU and the appropriate cooling that does the job, and fits in the case (as i went for the P3 purely for aesthetics but have been reading it has some sizing issues with long GPU's and the MSI one i have is 323mm)

I was originally thinking about the 5600x and MSI x570 which adds up to about $800 - however, it looks like there is a deal currently with an ASRock x570 and 5800x for roughly $160 more - should i just pull the trigger on this or is that mobo going to be an issue for me?

Further, can anyone suggest a cooling that would fit in the case and do the job appropriately?

I am largely using it for gaming and general office work from home activities - nothing too intense but i do want it to last a 3-5 years running average games like world of warcraft, valorant etc

Thanks in advance

  • If you're just gaming, 5600X is already plenty, performance gains going to 5800X is marginal (for gaming that is).

I'd probably get this EK AIO 360mm as 5000 series can get toasty, your case can support up to 420mm. If you're open to air coolers, this Dark Rock Pro 4 will do quiet well and looks nice but will block your RAM view.

    • Great - thanks ill go for that cooler, and probably just wait for a 5600 and get a better motherboard!

More generally, how important is the motherboard compared to having a better processor? The 5600x should have no problems lasting a few years?

      • Depends on how hard you want to push your processor with its boost algorithms. Choose a motherboard with features that you want or need and then choose by it's VRM and cooling capabilities, the better cooling (CPU as well) you have, the higher it will boost, provided your processor is of decent quality (silicon lottery).

5600x is one of the top of the line CPU that outperforms Intel's current offerings, it tremendously good. I'd say so as AMD is moving to a new socket AM5 which will take time to mature (don't know too much on this).

  • I recommend watching this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7PkZwY9PWM
The r5 5600 will be out in 1Q 2021 but I opted for a 5 2600 until prices get real, and I don't see that happening anytime soon.

  • hope you got a reputable psu and not just the cheapest labeled 750w.

    • I got a kcas one I believe for my old PC about 2-3 years ago - I do remember spending a fair bit on it so hope it will be sufficient

I wouldn't mind overclocking a little but all in all I just want something that works well, stable, and will last me 3-5 years playing medium titles at decent settings.

I never play highly intense games but would like lower graphics games at good settings for a few years

I am dabbling a little bit in editing so could see some use of the better processor.. but all in all I just want stability and good performance - there are so many parts with similar names I just don't to get something that isn't compatible and clunky!
