Toyota Landcruiser and Toyota Yaris Cross

Hi all,
Been lurking around this site for a while but never made an account until now..

My wife and I are looking to finally upgrade our cars. Our current cars are a Landcruiser which we've had for about 22 years now. We also have a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer which we've had for about 16 years now.. Looking to buy 2 new reliable and hardy cars to replace these as we live in the country and they will likely be the last cars we own..

We've already decided on a 2020 LandCruiser and the 2020 Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid (both of which we will purchase next year to get the discount from plate year clearance).

We plan on driving the LandCruiser for about 25 years and the Yaris Cross for 15 or so years, similar to our previous two cars.

Just wanted to ask if anyone has had any experience with these cars and your thoughts/any issues. I know the LandCruiser has had some attention with DPF and all but I believe they're resolved now. The Landcruiser we've already settled on, but the Yaris Cross Hybrid we're less familiar with so would be good to hear thoughts. It's also fairly new so I havent heard much. The hybrid battery is supposed to last a little over a decade generally, right?

Lol have you done any reading on the LC200? Stuff all left as production ends in March, and what's being sold are being sold for RRP for close enough to.

Leave it till next year and you'll have no chance of securing one

No one has plentiful stock of any vehicles, so plate clearances won't be anything major, if you can even secure a 2020 plated vehicle. It'll be like $500 difference between a 20 or 21 plate, unless it's a Hilux

    • My bad. Aren't they still continuing production but with a V6 and just dropping the V8, or have I gotten confused here?

Whole new model expected to arrive around October.

Totally new, still yet to be fully revealed

Expect large amount of pre-orders, which means either paying RRP or waiting quite a while. And expect a price rise from the current model

        • Cheers we'll try and get the current one now, otherwise happy to wait for the new one anyways. And yep looks like the whole plate clearance thing is negligible then

          • @Jjo53: Yeah, just go for a 21 plate :)

Why pay top dollar for an old model? Wait 12-18 months and get the new one! Prices might rise buy you've got another 12-18 months to save and resale will be better too.

            • @Presence: Always gonna have differing viewpoints about getting the 'tried and tested' outgoing one, or the new model

Plus they're coming out of a 1998 Landcruiser, so a 200 would be heavenly!

Resale is never an issue with Landcruisers, and resale of the V8 might hold better (look back to past engine size decreases, old models were worth more than new ones!)

@spackbace: Actually a 1991 Landcruiser that we bought second hand haha

It is if it's a popular vehicle and there is no stock of them left or very little stock. That tactic usually only works on dog boxes that don't sell or they over anticipated demand (ie: anything Jeep)

And you have buckleys of getting a Yaris Cross Hybrid as a "plate run out". Demand is going to be plentiful and you might be waiting until 2022 to get a plate clearance one to save money.

What I don't get is you are looking at spending up to or around $150,000 on your vehicles but you want to save 1~3% on waiting for "plate clearance" models?? I would say that if you are spending that much on new vehicles, the dealer should be able to do a much pointier deal than RRP and you will get that sort of deal by shopping smart and driving a hard bargain.

That’s a valid point. Surely it’d be better to save 10-30% buy buying near new.

              • @Euphemistic: I dont think they are going to save 30%, but they should already be able to negotiate decent deals if they are spending $150,000. What they want to look for, to save real coin, is like you said, a near new, possibly even an ex-demo vehicle or Toyota Australia exec/evaluation vehicle. Might have 2~5,000km on it, but they are keeping it for 25 years and will save a shit load more on buying that way than waiting for a "plate clearance"

To me, it just seems pointless to wait and wait and wait for a possible plate clearance to come up to only save a few measly buck if you are spending $150,000 already. Obviously OP isnt short of coins, so there wouldn't be an issue buying the cars now. May as well buy them and get the enjoyment out of them now for the pittance they will save by waiting another 12~18 months to finally land a "plate clearance" model.

                • @pegaxs: Yeah we'll probably just get the now rather than wait. Thought that waiting for the plate clearance would save a few thousand but given the high demand, won't be worth it. Obviously not a car buy expert..last time I bought a car was 2 decades ago. We'll look at demos. Tbh the Landcruiser was never as popular as it is now suddenly because of travel restrictions etc

You've got a lot to experience with Car Salesmen.

Won't happen on either one - 2019 Landcruisers are selling for the same price as new (once you account for stamp duty), and Yaris Cross came out in the last 2 months

  • Very long term planning

    • +1

Yep we tend to operate that way especially with cars

  • Don’t think you’ll be getting much discount on either of those. Both in high demand.

Maybe a second hand Prius C? It's "the same thing" as a Yaris.

Toyota Landcruiser and Toyota Yaris Cross

I thought you were planning to cross bred them :/ disappointed

    • Oh what a feeling!

    • I had the same thought! I was thinking poor little Yaris. That would be like crossing a Shetland and a Clydesdale.

It'll look like one of those Mad Max vehicles, built from scavenging from car parts.

  • If your going offroad with the 200 series, google for airbox not sealing issues and replacement engines…

  • did you end up buying the hybrid yaris cross?
