QFF Points - Will Value Go up or down?

QFF virgin here,

Just for some context, I'm considering a trip to Japan (when the time is right) and qantas seem to be throwing out some rather generous bonus points with signups to certain credit cards.

Having never been much of a traveler so I never had much interest in points. Thus, I have no idea how far 100,000 - 150,000 points will get me.

This site from 2019 list economy as 35,000 points. But now I'm wondering how relevant that data is now? Do you think Qantas will be looking to raise of lower the value of points next year if/when international travel opens up?

  • Don't forget taxes too. You have to pay… maybe 200-350 in taxes each way, as well as points.

    Still… a good deal!

I doubt qantas will change the value of points.

    • Yikes, I think I paid 350 to fly to Tokyo last time (one way). With the annual fee on the CC it sounds less worth it in this instance

  • Qantas did a big overhaul of points for flights last year, they would have many unhappy frequent flyers if they devalued them again. It is worth noting that you can also fly with Qantas points on companion airlines and the taxes for many of those are lot less.

    • Good to know. The concept of paying additional taxes is still sinking in - crazy. No such thing as a free lunch
      Cheers

I felt the same. Then discovered that I could use Qantas points for domestic flights on my USA trip. Best part was that I discovered the us carriers charge only a token fee for booking, less than 10 bucks iirc.

The taxes are massive only when flights leave from or land in aus. You might be better off booking a flight while in another country.

  • Maybe relatively less, as more people will have more, so each person will have less buying power in the context of availability and demand.

  • Qantas can devalue their points in other ways, I expect flight redemption availability to drop on their profitable routes IE AUS to London/America.

Agree they won't devalue the face value of the points but they can certainly make redeeming for flights less accessible to posh folks into less costly redemptions for Qantas IE redeeming points for goods on the Qantas Store.

Think about how many folks will have inflated points balances once this pandemic is over. No point having points if you can't use them when/how you want.

  • Lots of helpful info here, thanks heaps.

Follow up question - Am I looking at a world of pain booking with a friend? Can points be used on others?

    • I've done it before booking for someone else and it was fine.

Policy for cancelling redemption flights seem pretty flexible as long as you have notice.

Personally I'm considering buying return business to Japan in Nov of next year hoping travel will be safe enough.

If by September 2021 it doesn't feel safe I'll just cancel and from what I read it's a full reimbursement.

      • Also good to know, thanks

      • I've also booked J for 3pax to Japan return next Nov with FF points.. let's see what happens

        • +1

Haha I was thinking to do the same, let's hope there won't be a lot of mess after the Olympics

    • You're only allowed to book family members, but they don't ask for proof…

      • That actually makes sense. Thanks

  • +1

Value only ever goes one way… down. Look at the history of all reward points programs.

    • Fair expectation. In this case I was just wondering how much devalue to brace for.

  • Best to use your points in sectors where the tax component is minimal.

    • From your experience what are some of those sectors?

      • I mentioned it in my comment further above
