Sony XAV-AX3000 Dual DIN Head Unit $399 ($250 off) + Delivery (Free with eBay Plus/C&C) @ Supercheap Auto eBay

100

Seems like a decent upgrade to a stock head unit in an early 2010 car. Has both Android Auto and Apple Carplay ready to go out of the box.

Looks like SCA are clearing out stock to make room for its successor, the XAV-5000, which is similar to the XAV-3000 but supposedly has a clearer screen with capacitive touch instead of resistive.

Edit: apparently the XAV-AX5000 and XAV-AX3000 are from the same product line, so I guess the 3000s aren't being cleared out to make room for the 5000s.

I wouldn't want resistive screen - so annoying to use.

I think paying $50-100 extra for either of these two would be much better:

The firmware update for Kenwood has been very bad and bugs don't get fixed. You might get one update from Kenwood after shipping from the factory.

How is the firmware updates from Pioneer

    • Which one would you recommend? The pioneer or kenwood?

      • I've had zero issues with the Pioneer, I love it.

In saying that, I've never checked for firmware updates for any head unit, and made me now want to check hehe.

I'll go and check what firmware my Pioneer is running and if there are any updates.

I don't know much about Kenwood, I know they are promoted because they have in built steering wheel functionality whereas many other brands require an additional adaptor to be purchased.

        • What about the touch buttons, specially the volume up and down. I've always preferred the mechanical nobs or buttons over touch buttons. Any issues with regards to that?

          • @CommandoGold: No not at all. I did worry I would find this hard coming from a previous unit with knobs, however I didn't take long to adjust. I find I can do it by feel too - find the bottom left corner of the unit, then move finger up slightly to the volume.

In many newer cars this will be even less of an issue with steering wheel volume controls.

I suggest going into SCA or Autobarn and trying a few out that are set up and demo.

  • A nice unit - can't complain.

same, got it on sale for $360 a month or two ago, the screen seem responsive enough for me.

however, if someone wants to loan me their capacitive screen headunit to change my mind, I am all for it :)

  • Think the Sony XAV-AX5000 was on sale for $450 like a month or so ago.

    • There is an Ebay listing for one from the USA which is $440 + $60 shipping + import tarrifs.

The 5000 is $750 right now on SCA so $450 would have been a steal.

  • My CarPlay menu bar is always on the LEFT side. How do I set it to the RIGHT side where I drive?

EDIT: Mine's the same unit as the one in this deal.

    Thanks!

  • I got one of these. I find it recognising my finger a royal pain the the freckle. I actually dislike this unit a lot. It's sluggish, slow to load waze or AA. Adjusting volume is slow with the up/down button and no quick spin rotary dial. It's the sluggish slow speed of it that aggravates me daily, it's like being on 33.6 dial up. I've had it freeze trying to load waze and AA. It just gives me a black screen of death. Cant do anything unless I unplug phone and reconnect, but it can do it several times. Really is lousy. I was actually wondering if I had a faulty unit since it gets so many good reviews…

    • What phone are you using? Are you using a good quality cable? It has crashed on me a couple of times, but overall still a great unit.

EDIT: Use your nails, not your finger prints.

Looks like SCA are clearing out stock to make room for its successor, the XAV-5000

The XAV-AX5000 is not a successor to the XAV-AX3000. It is just a more expensive model. They have both been in the Sony lineup for a number of years now. In fact the 5000 is being replaced by the XAV-AX5500, new this year.

      My mistake.

    • yup. different tiers, not different generations.

There's also 1005, 3005, and 5005, which are semi-successors, already out. AFAIK the only upgrades on those are DAB+ radio?

  • hmm judging by some of the comments, might explain my experience with my Pioneer Z5150BT i got in my car. Got it a couple of years ago from Lifestyle store as well as upgraded some speakers and one of the amps (probably never going back to them, did a bit of a con job / scam on me, way over priced).

I find my pioneer unit quite annoying to use, very slow and clunky, crashes at times, and the screen just doesnt work that well at times. Doesnt recognise me pressing a button especially in the corners. Waze seems to have issues with it occasionally especially with music running on a app as well. I thought it was just my pioneer but sounds like people are having similar issues with this sony unit.

I had thought it was just all car units then my mum got a rental KIA while her car was being repaired, and this Kia (2020 model) touch screen unit worked flawlessly when i connected my phone to it. It was fast, responsive everytime and just worked perfectly. Then I realised not all car units are like that, i assumed it was just my pioneer. …

    • You’d think Pioneer would be a reputable brand…

      • Thats the thing, I paid a lot for it plus a exorbitant amount on installation charges.

    • A lot has changed in head units over the last few years, best to check them out in Supercheap etc - have a play with them.

A huge thing is capacitative screens vs resistive - I tried a few side by side in SCA, and Resistive was just awful.

  • Hi Guys, I'm trying to figure out what I need for Camry with sony
I'm really confused by the number of harnesses aerpro.com
    1. Sony ax1000
    2. facia FPA8180
    3. ISO harness with patch lead APP9SP4
    4. CHTO15C and CHTO3C? which do I need? APP9SP4 already retains steering wheel control?
    5. Universal ISO connectors & SWC adaptors APUNISW2 and APUNISW5 (More steering wheel control?)
    6. Primary Harnesses - ISO APP0141
    7. Aftermarket Headunit Antenna Adapter APA75
    8. T-Harnesses CT10TY01
    9. OEM Speaker Adapters APS43

That's a lot of stuff, do I need all these? where can I buy them all at once?

  • I looked at the feedback for Supercheap auto, and they only have like 90%. I mean, what the heck? Why people are giving them bad feedback?

  • Was going to go down this option but just couldn't get past getting an android head unit off aliexpress for $200 with more features, higher resolution and a capacitive touchscreen.

Honestly consider it before pulling the trigger on one of these, 4 years later and it's still going strong.

    • Hey Drakesy, can you send a link to the one you purchased. I've been considering purchasing an Android head unit but didn't know which brand to pull the trigger on. Thanx in advance.

      • This is my exact model
        https://www.joyingauto.com/joying-cheap-price-7-inch-double-…

Its getting a bit old now but if you step it up to an android 10 unit you've got a great head unit
*new ones seem to have android auto or apple carplay

        • Cheers, I have read that Joying is one of your best bets for a decent unit. I was also looking at units like this:
AU $246.12 24%OFF | 1 din DSP Android 10 Octa Core PX6 Car Radio Stereo GPS Navi Audio Video Unit PC Wifi BT HDMI AMP 7851 OBD DAB+ SWC 4G+64G
          https://a.aliexpress.com/_mriI1xb

Reviews on these units are always mixed, which makes it hard to commit.

        • How is the speed of booting up when you just started the car?

I've read reviews of other Android headunits they take so long to boot up that you have to wait before reversing your car cause it wouldn't show the rear cam until it finishes booting up.

          • @meong: Yeah I don't have the reversing camera installed, but I know it takes around 30 secs. I don't really notice it as I drive straight out

          • @meong: yep was going to post this - some of those cheap Ebay units take so long to boot up, using them with a reversing camera is painful.
