Recommend Tool Set or a Good Value Screw Driver Set

Hey looking to grab my dad a small Christmas's present. He has a lot of tools (albeit a bit all over the place and no complete set), most of them seem old and weathered now. I don't know much about tools but this Wera set seems okay judging by the comments https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/586689

Looking for recommendations, not looking for the best and expensive tool but something of good value and will last for some time, budget - $100 max.

There's nothing wrong with wera but if you're gonna be prying and levering then something cheaper might be good. Stanley have lots of sets around $30 with much larger sizes.

You won't feel bad using locking pliers on a cheaper set either.

Those old and weathered tools are probably better quality than 80% of what's on sale today. Perhaps a tool box instead? Gather up all his tools, clean them etc and present in the tool box.

    • i see where you're coming from but most of his screwdrivers have been rounded off

      • I see. Wera and Wiha are both good IMO and what I use. Does he actually use them as part of a hobby or work or is it more just a DIY maintenance thing? A $30 set of Stanley, as much as that brands quality has dropped significantly, will be fine for occasional DIY if you wanted something cheaper and can either save the rest or but a few more items.

Wera make nice screwdrivers, but they are a little over priced to what else is on the market for comparable quality. It also depends on what he is planning on doing with them. Is he using them for their intended purpose or using them as pry bars and chisels?

Another screwdriver I cant live without now that I have one is the Wiha 2x:1 Ultradriver (I have the #77791). I would say that Wiha is definitely on par with Wera and may even be a bit cheaper.

Another Screwdriver I cant live without is my Snap-On ratcheting screwdriver, but that might be WAY outside the budget.

Outside that, I also have the Stanley cushion grip handle set. Much nicer to use than the older acetyl style handled screwdrivers

    • as their intended purpose. i'll have a look at what he's got again, those tools may be useful, particularly the Wiha.

      • Yeah, if he already has a decent set of older screwdrivers, they may still be ok, so maybe aim at a different tool set or something with a different function/ability. The best part of my Wiha is that I don't need to carry a hand full of screwdrivers around and know that if I pick it up, it will have exactly what I need in it.

Maybe even something like the Xiaomi electric screw driver the "Wow-Stick" might even be something he might use. Putting together grandkids toys and furniture is so much easier with an electric screw driver…

Some of the newer tools which make life easier would be good, he may have plenty of spanners but a nice set of ratchet spanners can be a joy to use. eg this 12 set of Gearwrench ratchet ring spanners is about $88

edit locally Sydney Tools have a good deal on a 20piece set with free shipping for $129

Another vote for some ratcheting spanners. Could get a Mechpro Blue ratcheting spanner set for $41 from Repco and perhaps put the rest towards a 1/2" drive socket set (sockets, 1/2" handle, breaker bar, uni joint, spark plug sockets). I've been really happy with the MP blue tools.
