USB-C to HDMI 1440p @144Hz

Does anyone know where to buy a USB-C to HDMI adaptor that supports 1440p @ 144Hz? I want to use one for my work's 2019's Macbook Pro.

Apple's $100 version and Aliexpress's $15 adaptors both seem to do the same thing and max out at 60Hz.

Edit: Looks like adaptors that support 4K @ 60Hz will probably also support 1440p @ 144Hz. I purchased a HP USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adaptor from ebay for $25 and am now running 1440p @ 144Hz. And the apparent lag I felt while simply moving my mouse around was really due to me getting used to 144Hz. Funny how going from 60Hz -> 144Hz felt nice initially but not game changing but once you get used to it, going back from 144Hz -> 60Hz feels terrible.

  • I wouldn't expect USB-C can support a bandwidth fast enough.

Went to look it up and yep, it doesn't. USB-C caps out at about 5gbps where you need about 12gbps.

      This info is incorrect.

It was only a quick lookup.

If it's wrong, what's the right info?

        • I have no idea, but USB-C speeds depend on the USB interface version on the device, and are not capped at 5gbps. You could have a usbc port on a laptop with usb3.1 gen 1 that is capped at 5gbps, or you could have usbc on a laptop with usb 3.1gen 2 which would have 10gbps, or you could have usbc on a laptop with thunderbolt which would be even higher… It depends on the device.

          • @Riczter: 10 still isn't fast enough.

So apart from that number being incorrect, am I still wrong about it not being able to handle it?

PS. good pickup on the 10gbps.

@TheBird: macs have thunderbolt, which i believe has 40gbps. I have no idea if macs support 144hz, but if they dont it has nothing to do with the limitations of usb-c bandwidth

              • @Riczter: Doing a little more research it appears you may need a usb-c to display port adapter to get 144hz at 1440p, but I would try get info from someone more familiar with macs, im no expert in that area

              • @Riczter: OP is looking for a USB-C to HDMI connector at 1440p/144Hz.

  • Any reason you need more than 60hz with a Macbook? Genuine question, the only reason I can think for a higher framerate would be gaming which Macbooks aren't known for.

    • I've been using a G502 mouse with my macbook and after disabling acceleration (eventually resorted to using Steermouse because setting acceleration profile to 0 via the terminal no longer works apparently), I still feel off because it feels like there's lag of some sort when moving the cursor around. I thought that it might have to do with me getting used to using 144 and 165Hz monitors and hence this thread.

Either way, I'd be somewhat surprised if a $4k laptop couldn't easily support this.

  • From what I read, your Macbook have DP 1.4 support. So the best way is getting the USB-C to DP1.4 cable, not to HDMI.

But look like Apple limit the refresh rate to 120Hz only.

    • I would have preferred a HDMI option but may resort to this there really isn't one.

      • Then it not an option for you. You can only get a max 5K@60Hz by using USB-C to HDMI on macos.

  • Why would you want/need 1440p @144Hz ? Are you planning to game on the MBP ?
