Dual Sim Arrangement

Hi guys,

I recently got a dual sim phone and now I'm thinking of doing the following:

SIM A: a long expiry prepaid plan (eg. half price Optus/Telstra kit $30 kit that expires in 6 months) for my main phone number

SIM B: my data and backup $15 Kogan SIM that lasts 3 months with 20gb/month with a burner phone number

Do you guys think this is a good value method for phone connection?

Kogan cost per year: $15 x 4 packs = $45 $60
Optus/Telstra cost: $15 x 2 packs = $30

Total = $75 $90 per year

    $15 x 4 = $60

and it depends on your usage. if you make lots of phone calls / sms, $30 won't last you 6 months.

My experience with using second Sim slot as data sim:

Depending on your phone model, you can't go online while you are on a phone call. Was a bit of annoying while trying to look up a reference number from email while on the call.

Also, your data will momentarily turn off when you send/recv MMS. Depending on your phone model, MMS failures become fact of life.

    With your voice Sim:

Maybe consider an unlimited call plan, like $5/mth dodo plan. Quality is not assured, of course…

    • I've got the fold, and there's a setting that allows you to use data while on a call. Again, as you said depends on the phone. I'd like to believe newer dual sim phones have this functionality, but dyor.

I got dodo mobile and their customer service is very pushy. I ordered a sim card online. Arrived in about 8 business days. Tried to activate it online, followed instructions and everything seems fine. But 2 days later still nothing, no activation. So got onto their customer service (online chat). Wanted to cancel that sim card and sign up to a new deal. I didn't want to wait 8 business days to get my new sim card. So kept trying to contact different customer service until one said they can activate my current one. Very sales orientated and I'd imagine kpi is signing new clients across.

But after that hurdle, it's working fine. 5 bucks for unlimited sms/calls as well as voicemail is not bad. No mms or data though.

      • What’s to work around for sending and receiving MMS without paying another $5/mth. Was thinking to go Dodo with a second data only sim but the MMS is a sticking point.

  • I use Kogan <-> Belong for my main number with possible deals (~20GB/month)

  • There are other options for SIM A, both Pay As You Go plans:

Aldi $5 first year (starter SIM), $15 yearly recharge
    Amaysim $10 per year

Or you can port between the two for an average of $7.50 per year.
