  • Same code for me

  • Any decent reviews of this?

  • Is there a code that works for the Casio piano ?

      • Thanks

      • Does no t work for the piano

    • It would be an insane deal if there was a half price code for the piano.

Not the best but it's still a good price. Thanks

This paragraph from the review is why I'll pass:

The only real flaw with the A1000 is its image quality, but this could well be a deal-breaker. If you're spending this much on a dedicated camera, it's fair to assume it'll at least give a half-decent camera phone a run for its money, but the sadly the A1000's image quality falls well short. The problem here isn't so much the small sensor size, but rather a lack of advanced image processing to boost dynamic range and low light performance.

      • +3

        Shoot in raw?

      • +2

To be fair, if you are concerned about HDR , you are likely a serious landscape shooter, in which case you wouldn't even be looking at this camera

      • +4

Not for a moment suggesting that isn't a valid concern, but it's worth reframing that in the context of the camera costing $289 rather than $589

        • This is just not $589 camera. At 289 I guess it is tolerable, but at this range I'd rather have Canon SX430IS on sale.

          • @nfr: Yeah, the Canons are pretty much the default at this level.

I have't really looked at this segment of the market since early 2012 as our old Sony Cybershot DSC-HX30V continues to provide sterling service, but I was somewhat taken aback by the lack of progress in this space, doubtless driven by the competition from the phone market from below and pressure from the DSLR's from above. I was surprised to see GPS isn't standard in many cameras at the $500 range, which even our old Sony has.

            • +1

@The Vat: Yes I've also noticed the lack of progress. This space is just not an efficient market right now.

      • +1

I assumed it wouldn't have as good image quality as the latest phones (this review likely compared it to 2019 phones) so this confirms it. Nikon have fallen well behind when it comes to image processing. There really is no point in buying this camera as it is also completely inconvenient compared to a phone, which is always in your pocket and is ready to shoot with a double tap of the power button.

        • The only real attractor over a phone is the optical zoom.

I took a quick look at this to replace our 9 yo Sony Cybershot DSC-HX30V (bought as a decent Point & Shoot for travelling so it's more portable than the DSLR and its lenses) but the Sony is better featured (GPS, better zoom, lighter, smaller) than this thing and is pretty decent in low light.

It's the source of some amusement/disappointment that Nikon's smaller Point & Shoot cameras are generally terrible.

  • Is this any better than my Sony hx50v or my TZ90? Other than a slightly longer zoom?

In truth, if I bought a really top of the line mobile phone. Then how much better are these cameras now except for the zoom capacity?

    • The photos are generally a similiar quality to a flagship phone however the video quality will be noticeably better.

      • +2

Not sure about video better. iPhone 12 Pro Max has HDR video and it’s pretty good and I haven’t seen a cheap camera beats it yet.

        • +4

I agree - I also think a $289 pocket camera with equivalent to 840mm zoom isn't in the same market as an iPhone 12 Pro Max for $2000 though. These still have some place in my book for people who travel outdoors etc - I for example, don't like to balance my iphone between my fingers leaning over the edge of a boat offshore fishing, the ergonomics / grip and wrist strap of a compact digital make it seem completely fine (together with comfort of knowing I still have my phone safely tucked away) and other such scenarios.
I also don't like how quickly you mass fill up your iphone if you take a lot of photo and video on a holiday etc - particularly overseas (once borders re-open) its a potential pain to do mass cloud backup offshore and you can fill an iPhone memory quickly if you like to keep most of your photos on the device.

          • @MrFrugalSpend: All valid points except filling up your iPhone - iCloud storage is very cheap and if you’re filling up your 128/256GB+ phone you’re shooting way too much 4K60p footage :)

            • @MrMaxwell: Yeah not necessarily all HD video - I have over 150,000 photos accumulated over the years. Have to keep apps and some offline music content etc too… and I prefer them to be mine than bouncing around cloud land, analysed by apple, so don't actually use icloud. iphone 12 pro max is also not within my scope - i have 64gb
I've done plenty of overseas travel where the backup is not an immediate option also.

          • +1

@MrFrugalSpend: If you combine the phone and a camera then it is one less to carry for travel.

I like using an iPhone case that has a lanyard which allows me to do without camera and also not having to worry about dropping the phone into “deep water” but shallow water I don’t need to worry about as iPhone is waterproof to 3M.

I use a 512Gb iPhone 12 Pro Max and it’s very hard to fill it up even during month long holiday.

I also use iCloud, so all my photos backup overnight at the hotel WiFi automatically (back in the days before covid when I travel a lot). So I never have to worry about losing photos. Not to mention I turned on the option to keep the original in iCloud and iPhone optimised version on iPhone after backup. That automatically shrinks the size of iPhone photos and videos to optimise storage.

If you also think about the camera component of the phone, it’s not a $2k investment. The camera probably around $500?!?!?! So it’s kinda on pair with this Nikon.

            • @goraygo: I get a free work phone so i don't have to invest anything but a camera.
Unfortunately they don't get us the best storage / model - just 64gb / 8 at most
I wouldn't spend $2K on a phone when I already have a free one that does most things okay.
I also don't think I would like a lanyard on my phone day to day - maybe a switch for a holiday

      • that digital camera world review begs to differ:

        Verdict
The Coolpix A1000 is in large part a good camera. 35x optical zoom …
…easy to use, plenty of effects filters for those used to phone photography, yet it can still satisfy more advanced photographers with its semi-auto and manual modes, …electronic viewfinder…

The only real flaw with the A1000 is its image quality,… If you're spending this much on a dedicated camera, it's fair to assume it'll at least give a half-decent camera phone a run for its money, but the sadly the A1000's image quality falls well short. The problem here isn't so much the small sensor size, but rather a lack of advanced image processing to boost dynamic range and low light performance.

Of course if you need to zoom in, the Nikon far outperforms any digital zoom on a camera phone, but this really is the only area where the A1000's image quality is superior to a phone's.

If you want a pocket-sized travel camera with enormous zoom range for photographing wildlife, the A1000 may just be worth the money. But if you can sacrifice some zoom reach, a camera like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ100 with its 10x zoom range and significantly larger 1-inch-type sensor is a better all rounder.

  • I wonder what if the camera has a phone features built in, would it be a new invention?

I think Samsung? had that years ago

Failed as a camera, failed as a phone

      A flop :-(

        Samsung M8800 Pixon

    • The Panasonic CM1 was a serious camera strapped to a phone, sadly it never caught on.

The missus wanted a Samsung s4 zoom a few years back. Told her it wouldn't last as there was no decent protective covers for it. Eventually did have to replace the screen when it was dropped. Thats was a pain. Was never the same.
I try to tell her don't buy a phone if you can't source a decent cover.

    • Sony has 2 newer cameras with better than phone camera features but ain’t cheap. They are ZV-1 and RX100M7.

For photos, I think this camera is useful only for its reach. the wide end won't be much better than your new smartphone. for those who is interested in telephoto, bare in mind it would only be capable of stills, not actions.
For videos, this may be a good cheap option, the difference of image quality will not be as much when in video, and you have a very handy super zoom. As I don't take much videos I can't speak much about that though.

  • -1

Just let you guys know that the CMOS size of:
    1) iphone 12 is 1/1.9 inch
    2) this camera is 1/2.3 inch
iphone has lager CMOS (and better processor)…

    • +6

so instead of paying $289, it's a better deal to pay $2000+ for iPhone?

      • -3

        This is ridiculous.
For iphone users, the cameras on their phones already perform much better without paying this EXTRA $289!
For recently released flagship android phones, their cameras perform equally good as iphone. Thus no need to pay this EXTRA $289 too!
Not even consider the inconvenience cauased to bring this camera along with you.

        • +2

What's the optical zoom on an iPhone like? 🤔

          • -2

@barcer: iphone (or other andriod phones) provides you x5 (or x10) optical zoom, which is more than enough for the vast majority of users.

This camera CLAIMS a x35 optical zoom, but it would not be usuable above x10. Simplely consider the facts in photography: 1) what are the online reviews about most affordable zoom lenses (not those expensive ones with f2.8 or f4 apetures); 2) what kind of super stablization techniques needed for x35 zoom? Are you going to use this PORTABLE camera with a TRIPOD?

Anyway, for those believe that you can get a decent camera, go ahead. It is NOT a waste of my money.

            • @RimofLeo: Still rather this camera over an iPhone and become like that

            • @RimofLeo: Agreed with you @RimofLeo, this camera is pretty useless if you already got a good iPhone. You can buy a $5 app that improve heaps of the manual camera features that this camera can’t give.

Nikon didn’t mention they have stabilisation which means x35 is useless handheld. The user need a tripod which defeat the purpose of a small camera.

Video from this camera won’t be comparable to iPhone 12 videos with HDR.

  • Thanks

    Another camera :-)

Got roasted in this techradar review https://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/nikon-a1000-review

      tl;dr

handful of annoying design quirks make it difficult to recommend.

But operational quirks and less-than-ideal responsiveness, together with mixed image quality, mean it just doesn't impress enough.

      • +1

Was the whole quote tl;dr for you too? :)

"The usual bugbears associated with such small sensors, however, together with frequent responsiveness issues and a handful of annoying design quirks make it difficult to recommend."

  • +17

top reason to buy this camera - becuase it’s 50% off a brand name camera

Top reason not to buy this camera - becuase you’ll never use it, you’ll keep using your phone which is probably better

      And is always with you

  • I am in a market for a decent yet not too costly waterproof camera for the kids to use at the beach, swimming pool and snorkeling, a quick search on ozbargain here are some deal in 2018 if not even earlier, can any please recommend one? I have a gopro 5 but kids prefer to see the actual pic before taking them instead of just "shoot and look at a later"
    Thanks in advance

    • Check out underwater housing cases for your phone perhaps.

    • Olympus seem to come up on top in most reviews. We have one which the kids take camping.

Another gadget that you need to charge everyday (during travelling). No thanks

  • Some have mentioned this already, but what the hell. You cannot compare this $289 waterproof point 'n shoot camera to a bloody Iphone. The former is "fit for purpose"….i.e.for salt water fishermen like me who wade in the ocean over dodgy subsurface and occasionally take tumbles into the bargain. No place for an expensive Iphone I assure you,and you don't need to charge it every day as another Forumite posted. My 20c.thanks…

  • Another alternative: buy a reasonable quality pair of binoculars and a phone adapter for taking photos through it, although by far not a perfect solution for those who want to have telezoom, you will enjoy both for much longer than the lifespan of a digital camera or a smartphone.

  • It may seem like a deal, but consider the odds you'd bother to take it along and actually use it instead of your phone.

Compact Digital Cameras are not dying, they are dead.

    • -1

super zoom is the only feature that a phone can not have (due to the size limitation of optical zoom)..yet it depends how often you use it though. for most people x5 optimal zoom in a smart phone is enough
