E-Scooter Deals - "Are They Legal in...?" Comments

Hi there. Every time there's a deal posted about e-scooters, at least one member posts "Are these legal in QLD|NSW|VIC|SA|WA|TAS|ACT|NT?" Usually the deal gets cluttered with repetitive nonsense about legality, rather than the deal.

Is it legal to use on the road?
Still waiting for it to be legal in NSW
I think these are illegal to use in VIC on public roads and paths…
is there any push for this to be public property driven yet? feels like its been a long time in waiting 😴
Is this legal to use on footpath in VIC?

Would the mods support having a wiki page with the legality of scooters in Australia, then any comments like the above could be reported as off-topic?

    nah.
i think they should stay as they provide useful information.
a deal isn't a deal if the user can't use it the way they see fit due to legalities.

Of course, but obviously it's better if we can just post a link to the wiki page each time, instead of repeating the whole discussion every time.

      • but then i won't get to read the comments.

You sound like an e-scooter seller..?

    • Do I?

In the way that you're trying to suppress the awareness of the legalities of e-scooters.

        • More like, surely everyone is aware by now and we don't need to discuss it again in every new deal.

@pennypacker: Only those who frequent the e-scooter deals. You're leaving out the people who are either new to the website or new to looking for an e-scooter.

Maybe should go in title: "Legal in ACT|NSW|Vic" or whatever. Like you have to add "free delivery with Prime or over 39" for Amazon deals

    • I don't think deal posters should be burdened with knowing the legalities for all states and territories. It would be simpler if they just posted a wiki link in the body of the deal.

      • They don't have to, it can just be a standard line they have to add, and if they don't mods can add it (same as Amazon deals)

Few people don't check pages anyway… most people are here for the comments.

Feel free to make a wiki page, it'd be useful.

    This is OzBargain not OzQuasiLegalOpinionsfromInternetRandoms.

    • So is that an argument for or against the quasi legal opinions from internet randoms in the comments?

You can refer them to the "wiki", but if they are asking about the product and its legality, this is not "off topic" (asking "why is the sky blue?" in a scooter thread is off topic)

Or better still, you do the homework, work out what is legal and what isn't, cite your sources and update the wiki yourself… that's what wikis are good for, user submitted and verified.

Then you can get all "OMG, this again" and link back to your own hard work :D

At least in NSW the law is a bit unintuitive, and the penalties potentially eye watering, so I think it is pretty useful to have something that points out the legalities when these are posted.

Who cares, fines are cheap to live with.

It can cost you over 2k in fines in NSW.

      • Then you need to buy a scooter fast enough to out run the officer.
