Hyundai Palisade (2021) - Discussion Thread

I am looking to replace my Nissan Xtrail 2015. Originally was planning to get the next generation Toyota Kluger Hybrid but now I am favoring the Palisade after watching all the review, specs and features Hyundai have to offer. Obviously neither car is out in Australia and my opinion is based on US model.

Toyota is known to be reliable but I find their design and features a bit lackluster. Toyota have always play it safe and use proven technology but I am attracted with all tech savy feature the Palisade have to offer.

I think Hyundai have been stigmatised with being cheap and unreliable because of their first ever car Hyundai Excel but I think they have since come a long way and I am willing to give Hyundai a try. The car industry back in the days when the Excel first released have predicted Hyundai brand to rival the Japanese and here we are. Next 20 years everyone will be buying a Great Wall? (<— Terrible name)

Let me know your thought on the Hyundai Palisade. Tell me why it is over price, tell me you have a friend's friend who have all 3 Hyundai fail after warranty.

With the Palisade being new, what is the chance on getting some discount or delivery fee waiver, do I really have to pay the MSRP? If the sales person is not going to budged then why not just buy online and I dont have to deal with Ming Mole?

The is also talk of the Kia Telluride…
    https://www.caradvice.com.au/809881/2020-kia-telluride-revie…
    but not for Aust.

    • I am so hot for the Telluride right now. Been following them for a while and was kind of hoping that they may have been released under the Genesis badge in Australia. I dont know if they will make it here. Aussies are too hung up on twin cab utes for the Telluride to take off here…

Much like you I thought Hyundai had come a long way. Bit the bullet and and bought one of the most popular cars in the Australian small car market a brand new i30 SR in 2018.

Was nothing but an absolute nightmare. In the 19,000 KM's I owned it, broke down on 4 occasions requiring tows. Couldn't trust it on long drive with the fear it would leave me stranded. Engine was replaced and then new issues came straight after. Car wouldn't start when cold and each time I picked it up from the dealer after it was 'fixed' it had a different issue. One time it didn't make the 3km drive home from the dealer. It took the dealer over 3 months to replace the engine and they did a poor job of it.

In the end it got resolved and I no longer own the car. A friend of mine who bought a Santa Fe at the same time is now having issues with the clear coat peeling, no mechanical issues though.

Chances are if you were to purchase a Hyundai you would not experience the same issues, this is just based on my experience. I'd obviously never buy another one myself. Support was poor and slow when the issues came to rise.

Why are people negging this post?
This guy is sharing his and his friend's experiences with Hyundai and even recognises (in the last paragraph) that they could've just received bad examples.

    • A lot of the Hyundai vehicles are made in India or China where the quality control may be different.

    • I have an i30 SR @ 50k and it has been perfect apart from some normal teething issues like needing updates to in car entertainment.

I fully expect there to be fringe issues but the warranty should cover it.

I am looking at the palisade also for a growing family but without local reviews it would be a bit silly to pay msrp. If I can get mats, roof rack, and a tow bar I’d be happy.

My Hyundai excel took 100k km's of punishment in my teens thank you very much. How dare you speak like that of my reliable vehicle.

    It's an ugly car.

Agree with you there. Very ugly American style vehicle look.

Why are new car designs so hideous?

You’ll find the Toyota will keep more value come trade in time. All toyota suv style do for some reason.

  • I have 3 friends who own(ed) new hyundai cars over the past 5 years. 2 of them had plenty of issues and the third guy had just a battery issue once. 2 of them sold and went with a Toyota and a Mazda

I am looking to replace my Nissan Xtrail 2015

Just curious, why ? Is it a bad car, drives poorly, gutless engine etc? its only 5 yrs old

Space - I have 2 child seat and is a tight squeeze in the middle or 3rd roll when my mother comes along, obviously my wife sit in the middle/3rd row and not my mother who is less mobile. So needed something bigger.

Lack of features - Prior to Xtrail, I have and still own a Lexus IS250 2016 so I am spoiled by comfort and features from the $80,000 Lexus. The Xtrail lack a lot of features that my 10 year old (now 14years) Lexus have. Even though Xtrail ST-L was $36,000 at the time of purchase, I expected more features. The Xtrail 2015 feels like a car in the 90's with GPS screen to bring it into 20th Century.

When the Xtrail is in drive and idle at red light, the Xtrail vibrate like it have epilepsy. From the seat to the steering wheel. I have checked online and found others reported the same. Epilepsy is an exaggeration but is annoying enough for me to hate it.

The aircon is leaking after 3 years, so the aircon unit/component need to be replaced which is costly

Gutless engine, but to be expected from a 2.5L engine.

The tire screech when turning at round about. I personally feel I am going at reasonable speed so dont know who to blame, me or the Xtrail.

I am not a driving expert but the Xtrail is not fun to drive, but I guess the same for all SUV…?

  • I had a 2002 Hyundai Elantra which looked and felt cheap as hell in the interior and was terrible to drive (was a hand me down from the parentals a decade ago). Upgraded to a 2014 i30 Special Edition with leather interior over five years ago, the difference in quality in the interior is night and day and not just because of the leather (and of course it still drives well today). Hyundai have really lifted their game, will consider them again for my next car.

Have had a Kia sportage (made by Hyundai or at least share 80% of the parts with the equivalent tucson) and can safely say it's the most reliable car i've ever had - this is coming from a Subaru. Have owned it for 6 years now and 0 issues.

Would not hesitate to buy one again. Just want something faster next though.

  • also want to buy one any feedback OP

    • My mother is a brand snob and I respect her opinion too much so did not go ahead with the Palisade. Family could not agree on SUV, so I decided to get the car I want with no input from family. I ended up getting a Kia Stinger. Don't car if it is a Korea nor the fact it is not SUV.

The quality of the Kia Stinger exceeded my expectations. Better than my 2006 Lexus IS and many new Japanese car interior.

I don't have exposure with the Palisade since I did not go ahead. But given the petrol price, you may want to consider Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6. Is probably much smaller than the Palisade but your wallet might thank you.

      • My mother is a brand snob and I respect her opinion too much ….getting a Kia stinger.

Ummm….. calling someone a brand snob pretty much means you don’t respect their opinion.

      • thanks OP, I need a big car with big enough 3rd row
