Auto Traders Scammer Please Read!

Hi All. I hope you still have time to read this while browsing and shopping on Black Friday.

I was planning to buy a car and found one listed on Auto Trader, the car was located in Tasmania. I got in contact with seller, surprisingly the car wasn't sold yet because it was more than $6000 cheaper. SGTBT; Sounds Good To Be True. STGTBT Sounds Too Good To Be True

After 2 days of contacting, seller gave me a preferred option which was to deliver the car at seller's cost. Which was free for me. SGTBT.2 STGTBT.2

Seller said she's in WA but car was in warehouse called autotrader-movers.

I checked out the website, looks pro, very detailing. SGTBT.3 STGTBT.3

But…..i saw phone number was not available due to virus. This was very weird. Very suspicious. I even looked the ABN number on government website, given zero information.

Then I contacted Auto Trader and asked them if auto Trader mover belong to them. Their response was -

Hi x, Thanks for the feedback. We believe this is a fraudulent

Kind regards,

X

I stopped contacting the fake seller. Luckily I haven't sent them a deposit. A few hundred dollars would have been nice to spend legit stuff on Black Friday.

Happy Friday and happy shopping

When you back trace the Web Site address you get:
    https://www.ip-tracker.org/lookup/whois-lookup.php?query=aut…

This leads to another similarly named Qld based company… AUTO MOVER AUSTRALIA PTY LTD
    https://www.automover.com.au/

Pro tip: Why not rent "Dude, Where's My Car?"

Everything is legitimate here OP, 'Autotrader movers' move cars around Australia, whereas Autotrader sells car. Different business even though part of the name is same.

    • Seller wouldn't give me her contact number for the last 3 days. Sounds fishy

I disagree - looking closer at this site raises many flags:
      - The "Autotrader Movers" site rips off the Autotrader logo exactly - you wouldn't do this as a legit site
      - There is no mention of this service on the legit Autotrader website, even though they do link to their other affiliated services (CarsGuide and GumTree)
      - They didn't even put an address in the contact page - the Google Map resolves to the middle of a National Park in WA
      - Various inconsistencies throughout the site suggest a copy & paste hackjob (e.g. the "Pre Ship Checklist" links to a US Department of Transportation document, the "How It Works" has generic wording for an escrow site rather than a car shipping site)

tl;dr This is an escrow scam of some sort - you are right to stay far, far away from this.

  • Companie(s) might be legit but seller sure as hell isnt.

Always see the car in person, never buy sight unseen unless its a low kay car from a dealer.

        Much better 👍

  • Lucky you did not get stung.
Best to buy local and pay$ for a proper inspection and ppsr check and not get duped.

    • Thanks. Luckily I haven't sent a deposit.

This scam gets a regular mention on here

Try googling the car rego or vin and you'll see the original listing for the vehicle they used on autotraders.

    • This is a great find. All of the websites including the one I listed look the same.
