Looking to buy a 55inch tv for watching sports mainly.
Eyeing off the Hisense 55Q8.
But open minded to anything similar.

I had read that, but for my purpose of footy and cricket it should be fine. Thanks for letting me know though :))
No worries. I've seen the picture quality in store and it's excellent. Great value for money TV IMO.
Does high hz make a practical enough difference with tv content? Afaik most broadcast content is sent at a low frame rate, like 24 or 30?
I think they increase it to 60 for sports, I'm not sure though. I was going to bring that up earlier (true 120hz) but then I recalled that most things operate at a much lower frame rate & while refresh rate does make a difference, I believe for video content it's much better to focus on good interpolation than higher native refresh rate.
Gaming in particular is where the true 120hz shines while interpolation becomes a nuisance.
As for OP, I'd suggest looking at rtings first & comparing budget Sony, LG & Samsung TVs. They're not necessarily better than decent TCL & Hisense TVs but rtings is easily the most informative place(that I know of) to start & unfortunately both manufacturers use different models overseas where as the big 3 are somewhat more consistent here.
After finding a good base point from rtings, then I'd start looking at specific reviews of other brands that you're considering & hopefully the reviewers make comparison to other TVs to help temper expectations.
We do seem to share a lot of consumer tech with other countries so just because a North American based site doesn't have info, doesn't mean you won't information outside of Australia. India interestingly has a lot of the same consumer tech as us.
All good points and I agree with you in general. However there are some benefits to 120hz over 60hz even for regular movie viewing (generally 24fps), such as removing judder. This article explains it well: https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/motion/24p
Sport is generally 30/60fps so there shouldn't be any difference between a 60hz and 120hz panel.
Hisense Q8 is not a true 100/120hz panel unfortunately. It's a 50/60hz panel with motion interpolation technology. Still a very nice TV with good picture quality, but just wanted to make you aware.
