Stick Vacuum Recommendations for Long Hair (Not Just Pet!)

Hi all,

Looking for cordless stick vacuum recommendations to deal with long hair and pet hair.

I know there are tons of threads and recommendations for pet vacuums in general, but I'm specifically looking for vacuums that can also handle long hair without having it twist and wind all around the brush heads. We have hard floors all throughout, so no need to worry about carpets. I'd also want the stick vac to transform into a hand-held vac if possible.

We have a Dyson stick vac from a few years ago, and within a few minutes, it immediately tangles and stops working. We do have the 'tangle-free turbine brush' attachment from Dyson which was made for this, and it's perfect but… it's so TINY that we can't do the whole house with it.

Instead, we usually have to use our big bulky corded Kmart barrel vacuum because it somehow doesn't even have a brush head… it's just a hole that sucks everything up, so no tangles! It's great except that it's a barrel.

So far, I've found only a couple of vacuums that deal with tangles, like the stick vacs from Shark with Zero-M technology. The rest all seem to be barrel vacs or uprights.

Here's what I'm after:

  • Stick vacuum with decent runtime (>15mins)
  • Deals with long hair and tangles

That's pretty much it?!

Help! Would appreciate any recommendations or ideas.

  • My wife has very long hair and I have a Briard dog. I bought the dyson outsize. It’s amazing and it’s worth it. I have only had to remove hair from the roller head once manually and even the roller head is designed perfectly.
I do have a a fault with this vacuum, the port that goes from the stick to the barrel is too small for my liking(my dog drags in so much big stuff from outside, sticks and twigs and shit and I don’t want to pick it up haha) but otherwise it’s amazing. Changes power depending on the surface and just gets all their hair up.
My wife does complain about the weight of the vacuum though so please also factor that in

    • 😍 What colour is your briard? My family had briards while I was growing up. Such lovely dogs (but such thick hair!!). I don't think I've ever seen one since our last one died over ten years ago, they seem to be so rare.

      • +1

He’s black, he’s almost two, briards are making a come back. Breeder from toowoomba had two successful litters this year. Another 6 down in Vic and the rest in NSW.
We want to get a second fawn one. Yay even more hair!
Also I should have mentioned I went from a v6 to a v11 outsize. I loved my 6 and killed it and had all the similar problems described below. Took the motor head apart to try and bring it back to life but it was well and truly dead.
To take the v6 motor head apart for cleaning you needed a coin, then you had to tap off the end cap then slide out the roller head, then clean the hair out of the bearing ends of the roller head, then clean inside the motor head ends then put it all back together.
With the v11 outsize you pull on one lever to unlock the roller head, slide it out and then if there is any hair(have only had it wrap up once) you just grab it and slide it off then slide the roller head back in and clip the lever back. The design improvements just in that section alone made me happy with my purchase

  • For some years now I've had a dyson v6 and this was my biggest issue with it - long hair wrapped around the brush and into the bearings. I'd spend longer cleaning the hair out of the vacuum than I spent actually vacuuming.

A week ago I got the dyson v10 absolute on the black friday + existing owner discount, I'd been specifically chasing the absolute for its fluffy roller. This was supposed to be much better for long hair (and floorboards, which I've got throughout the house)

I haven't used it much yet, but can say it's definitely much better for the hair.
With the fluffy head most hair goes straight in, with only some wrapping in sort of tight rings around the (much larger) roller. So far, those rings of hair pull straight off the roller with little effort with fingers.
Previously on v6 I'd need to run scissors down the length of the roller to cut off all the hair.

In terms of weight though, it's larger than the v6 so that's not really helping you. Dyson have a couple of smaller / lighter models on sale elsewhere in the world that I would have much preferred (v10 holds much more than I need to get around my house) but they're not available here: https://www.dyson.co.uk/newsroom/overview/update/july-2020/d…

They do say the omni one will be available worldwide in 2021 so maybe wait for that if weight is an issue?

    • existing owner discount

Please tell me more about this

    • Hi @coronafire would love to find out how you got the existing owner discount too if you could share. Thanks!
