Has anyone had luck recently receiving a retention bonus for not cancelling their card with AMEX?
I know that they recently changed their policy around this but I'm curious if anyone has had a different experience.

Ex-card debit card holder here. You can get most of the bonuses with a free Amex credit card, or one of the fancier ones if you want ff points and spend enough to offset the fee.
I remember reading that you shouldn’t say the word “cancel” just dance around it but avoid it.

Flat out refusal due to new laws.I had the platinum. Cancelled it and they said they want me to call them as they may have offers.
They were offering bonus points to keep me. But I had no use for the card, so actually cancelled it.
Nope. I tried in Feb and got nothing after seeing if they could wave the cancellation fee and/or additional FF points to say on for another year. Partner also tried and got no offer to retain them.
I didn't use the word 'cancel' and played the dance saying that I was thinking about cancelling due to the annual fee and if there was anything that they could do. Flat out nothing and told me to cancel if I didn't want to pay the renewal fee.
I managed to get the fee waived several years in a row in the early 2010s. The one year I tried again and the operator just said, OK if you don’t want to pay the fee I will cancel the card, all done.
Annoying to change some direct debits, but opened the door to a nice sign on points bonus a couple of years later.
I tried for some fee relief due to COVID, but got nowhere.
One of my friends got a retention offer of 100k for his platinum in May.
Another friend got nothing in March.
I got 25k last December, canceled anyway.Update: Called AMEX to cancel Qantas Premium card.
Asked outright for a retention offer and was advised no, after a bit of back and forth I gave up.
Proceeded to close the card and like magic! the final step in the process (after being read the account closure script) offered 20,000 bonus qantas points to stay!
Seems like the sequencing of the retention offers has changed, only those brave enough to actually go through process of closing their account are they offered a retention offer.

chipped my Qantas Ultimate ($450/yr) down to a Qantas Discovery ($0) - they let me keep my saved Amex offers and free supplementary cards.
Called up at earlier this year to cancel my Green card, offred 50K to stay for one more year.
Gonna call up again see how this gonna go.
Interested to see some responses'. I have held a green card for 40 years and am seriously considering if it is worth continuing to hold the card and pay the $120 annual fees
