Great hard drive for storing all those Linux ISOs. Perfect for NAS situations.
Don't forget to use Shopback to bring it down even further!

Loud with vibration. I use to have my it on floating shelf on a plaster wall, with all the shucked seagate drives. Until I put two of these in ($280 range when I bought them), the wall and noise keeps throwing me off. I moved the shelf to the brick wall in the garage, problem has been solved.
Loud with vibration….hihihi…sorry couldn't help it putting the comments
Are you using the ozbargain-mandated noise-canceling Sony headphones to drown out the sweet dulcet tones of the hard drives?
I have regretted the moment I sent and I didn't bother editing it. So I upvoted both yours and televisi's reply for the fun you had :)
This or the WD 12tb elements?
Depends. the elements if you want more storage but arnt too fussed about what youre storing on them, but go the ultrastar you want more secure storage as its a enterprise grade drives and at this is an awesome price for them. just a bit worried as theyre coming a long way from the US and might get knocked about abit.
The 12TB Elements are rebranded WD Reds (WD White) so they are plenty reliable IMO, just with less warranty (none if you mess up the shuck)
I recently shucked 4 of these, the first time I've ever shucked a hdd and it was easy, in fact my 7yo daughter watched and wanted in on the fun so she actually shucked the final 3 for me :)
Up to you, more capacity is always nice…
Obviously the WD D10, which has the 12Tb version of this drive inside, and a much better enclosure than the elements drive.
Love to see big storage CMR drives these days.
How does it compare to Red/Ironwolf that are deisnged with NAS in mind?
Red pro tier or even a step higher
from what I understand these would be a step above red/red pro, and should also be a step above ironwolf and ironwolf pro (although I believe the ironwolf pro disks come with some nice data recovery options). these are technically competing against the exos range, in terms of rated workload and MTBF.
techincally faster / more durable buy you pay for it in heat and noise
Don't these have warranty issues since they are commercial channel products instead of retail?
Also, Amazon US products on AU might not be Amazon US products, but just fulfilled by Amazon US. See quite a few products on AU, and when checking the same on US, its all third party sellers.
https://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Ultrastar-HUS728T8TAL…
None directly sold by Amazon, just fulfilled.
yeah warranty is always a concern for these drives. I purchased some of the same model a while ago, but through Amazon US store, shipped to Australia. they were fulfilled by some random US shop.
WD site had some unhelpful error. I contacted the shop asking about warranty, they said Amazon made a mistake shipping to me in Australia and to send them back.
I contacted Amazon US and they said they will honour the 5 year warranty: "to be honest we are the one responsible for the refund or replacement just in case the item will encounter some problem regardless if the return window already expired. Amazon will honor its 5 year warranty"
now the question is whether actually buying through Amazon Australia changes anything. I would hope not, and I would probably imagine not, but some people might want to check.
My understanding is that if you buy from Amazon AU, it's bound my Australian law and the seller has the honour the warranty. They clearly state on their page the 5 year warranty which should be covered if any issues arise. I took screenshots months ago when I originally purchased these incase they decide they don't want to honour it.
I am more concerned about it being fulfilled by third parties and god knows where they got the drives from. Warranties are great and all, but data loss is annoying as, even if you have back ups.
@dyziplen: 100%. Often the warranty is quite meaningless if you lose important data. Every WD drive I have ever had has failed at some point eventually so I tend to stay away.
@rik30: Yeah, I had 3x5TB WD Red drives all fail within the space of 2 months after owning them for only 4 years, conveniently just out of warranty.
As these are enterprise drives, I expect them to last longer as they're rated for 24/7 use, I have unraid shut down drives which aren't in use after an hour.
@dyziplen: Ones I bought a few months ago were fulfilled by Amazon US themselves.
Yeah, I got it from Amazon AU and seller is Amazon US. I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like international warranty.

This links directly to Amazon AU and seller is Amazon US.
semi related - anyone know where to get a good stash of 512n format SATA drives in 4&6TB size? - old NAS at work only works with them.
Easy for SAS ones - but getting harder to find SATA.
Tried 512e - no soap
Thanks OP, bought 5 of these

Slightly older model however only ~215 AUD + shipping (pretty cheap shipping if you're buying multiples.
What are their shipping rates to Australia?
Buying 4 hdd's at ~855 AUD would incur 85 AUD in shipping by my brief calculations. You can just click the link, add to cart and calculate for your own address for a more accurate number.
Iv got 1 of these in my unraid server and i wouldnt buy again (if you plan on being in the same room as it)
1 drive is louder (head seeking and vibrations) than 4 other WD red drives and it constantly runs 10ºC hotter than the other drive
Good for a data centre or somewhere out of ear shot but very noticeable if your in the same room
Guys, how well are these packaged for international shipping?
Nice to see fellow unRAID'ers.
Im waiting for some shuckable seagates to put into a terramaster f5-221 (sale monday) on unraid so i can properly backup my norco 4224 unraid server.
I'm sure you have a reason why the second box isn't just another Unraid Norco 4224 in a different location :P
linux distros….ummmk ;)
There should be a pornstar by the name of Linux Iso heh
Anyone used these in a udm pro for survellience?
Where can I buy one copy of Linux please?
Fantastic drive, if a bit loud. Using 4 of these in my Unraid NAS. Great price now, I picked these up for ~$290-ish about 3 months back.
