It seems this HDD is on Black Friday Special, a few bucks more than during Prime Day, but doesn't seem to be a Prime exclusive.

These likely contain a HGST Ultrastar DC HC520, which is a $600 drive if you want to shuck it.
Better to shuck these than the Elements, as these have the middle screw holes missing from the Elements drive.

Edit: Quantity limited to 3 per account. I tried ordering a second lot after it came back in stock and it would not let me.
Edit2: Seems this keeps going in and out of stock throughout the day, so I think it's best to leave it until end of Cyber Monday so people can keep checking if they need it. I'll set expiry for Tuesday 1st December.

  • Wow, damn , went OOS as soon as i tried to order.

    Ah well.

    EDIT: Back in stock.

  • +1

I bought this during prime day sale. Same price from Amazon UK. HC520 HDD inside. Super happy for this buy. file copy speed is ~240MB/s.

    • did you keep the xbox code

      • I sold mine, will be selling mine again.

        • How did you sell it? Is it worth much?

          • +1

@GaAs: Answer is $25 each for my codes anyway.

  • That was quick

  • Noooo I missed it!!

  • Back in stock now, but only 2 units

  • Definately shuckable? I thought most WD external have the usb controller connected directly to the hdd motherboard?

    • There are many reports out there that say it's shuckable with an allen key. I haven't shucked mine from Prime Day yet, as I can't find my allen keys.

      • Interesting.. I know the WD P10 Black drives aren't shuckable so maybe they changed it

        • P10 is the small portable drive. D10 is standard sized 3.5" drive in a pretty good enclosure. After shucking, I plan to actually (try to) use the enclosure with another drive, as these enclosures look very good.

    • just shucked 4 from last sale

      there are videos online

    • I shucked 2 a few weeks ago, it has a enterprise-class HDD inside.

  • Back in stock, just got one with delivery window Dec 10 - Dec 23 which seems ok to me. Here is a youTube vid on how to shuck one of these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaCLvv3Qkmg

  • Got 3. Needed 4 for my NAS but limit of 3 per customer. Still in stock.

    • second account

      • Doesn't shipping kill the deal for the 2nd account (assuming most people only pay for 1 prime membership)

    • are u keeping the xbox code?

  • Exactly what I needed for my kids for Christmas. Thanks OP! Perfect timing.

  • I received my unit the other day. However, I am not sure if it is functioning. So I am just wondering if someone who has one of these can comment on its behaviour when connected to a PC. If I connect it to a PC and click on manage storage it doesn't see the drive, so therefore I cant format it. The drive sounds like it is spinning up normally however. I am not sure if its large size is the issue or if it is faulty. Anyone?

    • It takes a while to detect… you should plug in the power to the drive, and the usb cable, then connect the usb to the PC. After that, wait about 2 - 3 mins before windows can pick it up. I've 7 of these now, and have tested 4 (testing the last 3 tomorrow) before shucking to put into my server. It was consistent across the 4 that I've tested… very slow to pick up, but once detected, blazing fast.
