2TB External Hard Drive under $100

Purchased the 2TB hard drive from BigW for $98, it crapped out a few days ago and I couldn't get an exchange (without them adding on $40 for the same hard drive with only USB2.0 rather than 3.0). Hoping to replace it for a really similar price.

  • What was the brand? Seagate and Western Digital for example have a 3-5 year warranty on their drives, it is simply a matter of going onto their website, entering a serial number, getting a return authorisation and mailing it to them (Singapore?) for replacement, usually a factory refurbished drive with the remainder of your warranty. Should only cost you $10-$15 for tracked postage.

I realise 60% or so of the worlds hard disk manufacturers factories were flooded recently, causing a global shortage of new drives, I'm not sure how this affects their refurbishing operation or how much stocks of replacement drives they have.

what exactly do you mean by 'it crapped out a few days ago…"?

  • No exchange possible at BigW, so got money back on hard drive.

If anyone is wondering I found a "Seagate Expansion External Hard Drive 2TB" for $99 at Dick Smith, Liverpool (Westfields), the tag scanned $189, but it's $99 according to the shelf sticker (the guy might have removed it).

A new shipment of the same Seagates are, apparently, arriving at OfficeWorks all around the place the next week or so, for $109.
