Best GPS for the average user

Hi friends,

I need to buy a GPS. I've seen anything from $99 to $400+. I don't want to buy a cheap one and get annoyed with it because it doesn't work well, at the same time i don't want to spend a lot of money on an uber one if i'm never going to even notice the difference.

Needs to have all the basic features:

  • spoken route guidance
  • decent route planning
  • come with maps (assuming this is standard) // with free upgrades?
  • pick up lots of speed cameras and beeps well in advance

Other features:

  • decent battery life as our car doesn't have a cigarette lighter i think
  • easy to use
  • reliable

Please let me know if you have seen any good deal around?

Thanks
Jenny

  • Tom Tom will fit your requirements as well as nearly every other GPS!! I have 2. I also had a Navman but wont support them anymore due to the way they "dropped" anyone with an older unit wanting upgraded maps. Bastards!

Get the 5 inch screen Tom Tom if you go down that path. 4.3 is OK too. I think they're about $199 or less at JB. Haven't bought one for about 18 months, so not really sure. With Chrissie there's bound to be some sort of specials happening. Just got back from the States and I bought a Tom Tom over there too! Reliable, easy to plan, spoken streets is a bonus (I've noticed that they don't speak ALL streets on either the Oz or US ones??). Fixed speed cameras are well documented and the beep is loud enough.

As for battery life, they don't last more than a couple of hours without a charger, so I'm afraid I can't really help you as to its REAL battery life. I know a lot of modern cars don't have ciggie lighters anymore but they offer usb ports instead. Can't get one put in by a sparky? If you're travelling long distances you're stuffed without a car battery charger for it!
