Buying a used computer from a cyber cafe

The computers were built for gaming so I assume people have been playing games on them at the cyber cafe. Anyway, they seem pretty cheap, but I guess I am concerned about the components being overworked.

What do people think?

  • The question to ask yourself is why are they selling it in the first place.

    • i dunno, but presumably cyber cafes must update their equipment now and again to stay on top of the new games right?

      • i dunno about that, counterstrike can run on a pretty old machine…

        • +1

are you suggesting that said cafes have only counterstrike installed on their machines?

        • Yes mate clearly that's exactly what morpheu is suggesting.

    • accounting reasons.
      the computers are business assets.
      they have been depreciated.

  • I dunno, ive been to a cafe with 3D gaming. L4d3d was pretty badass, and nausieating

  • so, is it a good idea, or a bad idea :P

  • unless you are really poor and its something like $300 its not worth it.

Why you would want to buy a computer with no warranty that could fail tomorrow and probably isn't that great anyway is unknown to me…

  • well it's $180 see: http://sydney.gumtree.com.au/c-Stuff-for-Sale-computers-soft…

    specs:

    • Cpu: intel core 2 duo e8400 3ghz
    • Memory 4GB
    • Mobo: 2 different types of gigabyte boards, ep35-ds3p and ep45-ds4p
    • Graphics card: several different types, some nvidia gts250's, gts450's and 9800gtx's around.
    • Hard drives: 500gb, most are samsung, some are seagate.
    • Keyboards: razer tarantula (gaming keyboard)
    • Mice: most are razer copperheads, some logitech gaming mice (can't remember the model) and 2 other razer models dotted around. (gaming mice)
    • Power supply: thermaltake 750w
    • All the optical drives are cd-rw and dvd readable, some might also be writable.
    • thermaltakecase
    • Windows Vista License
    • Various gaming headsets
    • Various games to be thrown in.
  • I guess I am concerned about the components being overworked.

As a general rule, computer components don't get "over-worked". They either work, or they don't.

That price is good - I am looking at grabbing one myself. Thanks

    • excellent, maybe i'll see you at the cafe then?

    • +1

hey you know what, we should organise a group buy and get a discount :p

  • +2

Give it a once over with strong disinfectant first. lol

  • Well

I got one. Apart from breaking one chip of ram (hopefully not the mobo) on the way home it all works nicely. Came with vista ultimate oem installation + license as well (although i had to call microsoft to automatically transfer the license)

    Time will tell. They only had gts250, 9800gtx, and radeon 4870's left. Well they had a stack of 40 computers, I couldn't find a 450. I took a 4870…

    • Not bad considering the e8400 and 4870 go for about $50 each used. So that's $100 right there, basically $80 for everything is a pretty nice pick up! Especially for a genuine windows license albeit Vista.

    • do you have a number or address? gumtree is slow

      • follow the link I posted and email the guy there. He answers very quickly.

  • .

  • thats a good deal. 4870 although not the latest and greatest and not what I would put in a gaming machine, is suitable for most pre-2009 games at the highest settings. Getting a sweetass but used razer keyboard and mouse is all the better.
A Name brand PSU is nothing to sneeze at either and is enough for most upgrades. I'd get one myself if it Sydney wasn't that far away.

Only thing is CPU + Mobo + RAM are 3 generations behind and any upgrade to one means the rest will have to be changed as well

    • +2

i am 3 generations behind on games, so it's ok :P

    • You could get someone to mail you the bits….
$40 in post for everything including the case (if it comes in under 20kg, it should considering it's only a mid sized case) LOL
