Endoscope / Snake Camera Recommendation

Hi OzBarganeers,

I'm looking to install ethernet through my apartment (primarily through the ceiling). Most rooms only have a small space (~5cm) between my ceiling and the concrete slab. I want to explore the space to find where all the batons are and where the best route would be to run the ethernet. The main points of access without cutting more holes would be the holes for the lights. These currently aren't big enough to get a good look.

I'm currently thinking of getting a snake camera. Has anyone got an experience with these? I know sometimes the ones that bluetooth to a phone can be unreliable.

If anyone has any recommendations I would appreciate that.

Thanks

I've never had to use a camera to do it but I would think any cheap camera would do the job. BTW, do you realise it's actually illegal to install data cables in walls etc unless you're a registered cabler? Essential zero chance of being caught but thought I'd mention it.

Because the back plates of most fittings are not shrouded. Sometimes there is exposed cable. And OP wants to send up what is often a metallic pole.

This has the potential for death if a house is not up to code.

This job is usually done with experience, tape and a fibreglass snake.

        • Fair enough. Though I'd have thought exposed cable would only be an issue on older homes?

@EightImmortals: Many people don't use the instructions when stripping cable for fittings. Some people will use illegal join types. Rats are a thing.

I hope you think of all the children and puppies that will be killed due to you running your own ethernet cable, and not getting a licenced cabler to do it.

  • Could just pay an electrician to do it. I've heard of electricians not even charging for the cable. And they know how to do it because they done it 100 times before, just lift a few tiles, or pull out their tool like you say or whatever they needed to do the 100s of other times.

The cablers don't bother with cameras generally. Just shove long plastic or steel rods thru the gap and drag thru the cables.

The snake cameras are harder than it looks as they don't auto focus.

I’ve used a couple different snake cams (actually looking for snakes) and all the ones I’ve tried aren’t rigid enough to run any distance despite the advertising. You have to either attach them to fencing wire or run them through conduit.
