Great price although everyone is bagging out the screen in the reviews which is a deal-breaker for me - am after a Chromebook for watching movies and YTs so I was excited there for a moment. Still, a good deal

Yeah it isn't the best but I reckon it's more than enough for my primary school kids to do some light work and watch some video clips.
I bought a C340 for my oldest and since my younger one is now keen to learn to type and write too, why not buy another chromebook for this price.

Ive been wanting to stuff around with a Chromebook and the FullHD swung me over. I just brought one.

        • It's a decent piece of kit for this price range for light use but not that good for everyday use for mine. When watching Youtube for instance it does stutter a fair bit.

          • @dins: Youtube stutter?
that's concerning, I was considering getting one of these for someone that watches loads of Youtube and wants to do light Office work.

Are you sure it wasn't your Internet connection? The Celeron N4000 and UHD Graphics 600 combination is fairly ubiquitous in lower-priced Chromebooks and laptops, as is 4GB RAM. If any of those are the problem for YouTube then I'm going to have to spend a lot more than I hoped to :(

Any advice on what specs would improve YouTube playback, please?

            • @sam buster: There's definite stutter and constant buffering when watching YouTube (anything higher than 720p from what I can recall). It can't be my connection since pretty much all other devices work fine. It heats up real quick as well. For general web browsing and email etc it works fine but wouldn't recommend for anything more than that.

We also have the C340 and that one is a lot better on the whole plus has a touch screen as well. If you're not in a rush I would keep an eye on that one. Earlier this year Amazon had that one for around $340 with a bonus $100 Amazon gift card.

@dins: Thanks for the reply, Dins.
Strange how there can be so much difference in performance when they both in the same / similar product line, with so many common components.

                • @sam buster: No worries also another one you might want to keep an eye on:

                  Lenovo Duet Chromebook (128GB)

                  Lenovo Duet Chromebook (128GB)

Haven't used that one myself tho.

                  • @dins: Thanks, they are the deals that made me start to consider a Chromebook. I know it's very popular on here but I think at 10" it's a bit too small and I don't like that it only has a USB C port - all my external storage has USB A.

I bought one of these for my elderly parents. Yes, the screen is bad. There's no useful viewing angle other than front-on. It's like a screen from the old days of laptops. However, if you're front-on at an OK angle, it works fine.

While setting it up I did a lot of browsing in Chrome, watched a lot of SBS On Demand videos (I'm hooked on the survival series "Alone"), and started to wonder why I don't have one of these throwaway Chromebooks myself for use around the house. It's perfectly serviceable. The only problems I had were the screen viewing angle and the spacebar on the (otherwise fine) keyboard. The spacebar didn't like responding to my touch typing, where I tend to tap the right-hand side of the spacebar with my right thumb. If you tap the spacebar in the middle it's fine.

Parents are now using the Chromebook and it seems to be working. The battery life is great - actually lasted longer than my Dell XPS. I had no trouble hooking it up to their wifi printer.

Screen is hot garbage, light bleed, bad viewing angles etc. Wife doesn't seem to mind though.

  • is this ok for retrogaming?

    • Is it easy to retrogame on a Chromebook?

      • +1

Very, just download Retroarch and that covers 99% of what you can play on this hardware

  • Has anyone ever tried one of these with the mobile Microsoft Office apps installed?

I understand they aren't as full functioned as the desktop based versions, but wondering if it would suffice for the odd bit of work when I'm away from the desk and wanted to do a bit of work using office.

I bought one for my 80-year-old parents to reduce their vulnerability to malware. The MS apps I installed were Outlook and MS Word. The Outlook version is fine, though you may want to play with a few display settings. However, you can't print from Outlook as far as I can tell. The version of MS Word is also fine, but to do any work in it (other than using it as a viewer) you need to prove you have an Office/Word licence. That's all I know.

      • +1

Fair enough. Yeah, I got an Office 365 license, so sounds like it should be OK.

        Thanks for the response.

  • Better to get this or wait for black friday?

    • +1

If you want a dirt-cheap Chromebook with a 14" screen (though it's a bad screen with poor viewing angles) I can't see a reason to wait. But if you want a better overall Chromebook, wait for Black Friday.

      • If this isn't too stupid a question, what would make a better overall Chromebook (or even laptop) without being much more expensive?

        • +1

On this one? Definitely a better screen. I also had a bit of a disagreement with the spacebar, which didn't like being tapped on the right, and needed to be tapped in the centre. The size is slightly on the large size, making it more of a bulky plasticky build - I think a good size is 13.3" like the Pixelbook Go (which is much more expensive). But overall there's NOT much wrong with this one for the price, and I liked it.

          • @Morven: Thanks, Morven.
Did you notice any YouTube stutter or heating up issues, as mentioned by Dins earlier?

            • @sam buster: No. I only had the chromebook for a few days before handing it over to my parents, but I enjoyed watching YouTube and SBS On Demand on it. Both ran well. I was surprised at how I forgot I was using the Chromebook and just enjoyed the content. The only thing jolted me back to reality sometimes was tilting the screen when I wasn't at an optimal viewing angle.

  • Would this be good for zoom meetings? I'm a bit clueless 🙄🤔

    • Yes, although I prefer Google Meet.

The most important thing with video conferencing is either a headset or multiple microphones and good noise cancelling. Typically if Google Assistant is supported, microphones are good.

  • What's the real world difference in this ,the chromebook duet and the better of the two and ipad 8th gen for streaming ,light browsing and video calls please

    • I've ordered the Chromebook Duet, because I wanted the smaller size and detachable keyboard.

    • +2

This model doesn't have touch screen and doesn't rotate 360 degrees so it's an old fashioned traditional laptop.
