Wouldnt buy that or any sound bar 7.* system unless severely limited for space..speakers age very well, a 5.1.2 or a 7.1.2 used set of jbl, bose, sony, harmon, yamaha even klipsch can be had at way cheaper prices on fb or gumtree or flebay leaving enough to buy a decent receiver for a complete package

    • +2

Most don't buy soundbar purely for the audio…the reduction in clutter/size/boxes is a significant factor.

    • -1

Constantly see high end speaker packages being sold second hand for half the price of this LG rubbish. They say 770W!? That's ridiculous, even a $2000 AV receiver by itself will struggle to give you that power. Upfiring speakers can work for Atmos but you need to have the right room size, height and distance. It's not gona be good coming from minuscule speakers on a thin soundbar that's sitting so low beneath the TV.

    • I love my Gumtree Klipsch system with 96db sensitivity (F3). Best thing i have ever bought by far.

      • Yeah I agree, anyone who knows how sound travels and how surround sound sound works cannot possibly promote a sound bar at this price point, not for video and definitely not for audio. Nothing wrong with a sound bar at the right price point because it has it's pros but to buy a sound bar for Dolby Atmos is ridiculous and at this price point it is ludicrous.

In a few years maybe there would be a technology that simulates 3 dimensional sound from a single tiny speaker, sadly we are not there yet. But the current sound bars are great for what they are, single speaker with a sub and many of them produce very good sound but I personally would not buy or promote a sound bar at this price, loud is not the same as good and the stated output from this setup is highly sus anyways.

It is your money so do what you feel right but if you want to experience real Dolby Atmos for video a cheaper set up will get you a better experience if you have the space.

        • Agreed mate.

        • What's your recommendation for a basic 2.1 bang-for-your-buck soundbar w/o Atmos? (like the RX580 equivalent of soundbars, good enough for mainstream without the bells and whistles).

I had my eye on TCL 7010 for a while now, waiting for it to be ~$200 again because it's the loudest (320w) at that price point, but since you said loud =/= good, I'm not sure anymore.

@ioga: JBL sound bar has good reviews but if you have a set budget I'd suggest narrowing down to 3 models then going down to a shop listening to the three and finalising on one then wait till prices drop on Black Friday or Christmas sales.Sound is a very subjective thing so should always listen to the set up, reviews will help decide. Whathifi is pretty well regarded for their reviews…. https://www.whathifi.com/au/jbl/bar-studio/review

There is a forum for this soundbar at Whirpool with very good reviews, even before that, I had seen lots of good review and ended up buying it.
I believe it is overrated, while it is a good soundbar, the Atmos is no where near a real 7.1.4 system.
Had an Email from JB the other day for the same price but apparently was a mistake as they corrected it.
Not enough bass, Atmos is ok but nothing special and other issue is I still haven’t been able to get 4K HDR/DV from Apple TV to work. Have ordered higher quality HDMI cable to see if it makes any difference. Current HDMI cable provides HDR/DV when connected to TV directly but downscales to 4K SDR 60hz or HDR/DV @30Hz
Good if you have limited space.

    • What other soundbar would you recommend other than the Samsung Q950T as that's my current soundbar.

      • +1

This one and your one are the most popular Atmos ones around. A friend bought a Nakamici 9.2.4 from US, it was expensive but it is extremely loud for music, I haven't heard Atmos on it though. I like the clarity of Yamaha YSP 2700 for Music, good for movie too, but no Atmos, no eARC.
Between yours and this LG many videos some say your some say this, I would rate them around the same level
LG is very large though, same width of 65" TV and as said lacks bass.

      • Based on the following review, Q950T has good sound quality and better Atmos experience than SN11RG. However, if you are looking for other functionalities, LG is better.

      • how do you find the Q950T? Any issues with wifi interference?

        • I haven't experienced any in the 3 months that I've used it

    • I connected my ATV4K into hdmi in of SN8YG then arc to TV. The HDMI cables are 2.1 18mbps so I think the bandwidth was enough for it all to work.

      • Good to know, so it's 4K HDR/DV @60 Hz ?
Could you please advise what HDMI cable you used ? I mean what brand ?

  • +1

I don't regret my SJ9, given I've had it for years and have no space for rears.

  • How does the Sonos ARC compare with this unit?

    • It's very different, and a more conventional speaker

  • -3

Guys, I’ve got an Edifier S1000DB
Hi-Fi 2.0 Active Bookshelf Speakers set up. They cost almost nothing but I’ve yet to see a soundbar that comes close. Goodness knows what the new Edifiers can do. But my setup is far and away better than ANY sound bar I’ve ever heard.

    • +3

Not even aimed at the same use case

Your setup is aimed primarily at music
A soundbar is aimed primarily at surround sound/movies

Your setup likely does a better job than a soundbar (assuming no sub) for straight stereo music setup, but it's clearly going to lack compared to the soundbar ability to provide a surround type experience.

  • I've got this. I like it but a few important gotchas:

    • Beware that it creates its own wifi network that clashes with your home network, causing the speakers to drop out occasionally. The manual recommends that you keep the speakers at least one metre away from any wireless transmitting device. I would recommend more than a metre. I've found the rear speakers in particular are very sensitive to other devices including a Google Nest Hub Max - you need several metres between the rear speakers and any other wifi device. This can be pretty irritating if your NBN comes into your living room. If you have wifi interference issues, give this a wide berth and try for maybe Sonos instead (the Samsung QR90 seems to suffer similar wifi issues).

    • if you crank up the volume to watch TV, the soundbar retains that volume for when it is next used - including for Google Assistant duties. My family has not liked being blasted by Google Home responses at a massive volume. There's no way to automate turning the volume down after watching TV that I could find using IFTTT, so you just need to remember to do so manually each time.

    • when watching TV, the Google Assistant feature is disabled. So you can't use the soundbar's own GA to adjust it, you need a separate Google Home product nearby.

That all said, it sounds good enough I am not returning it. We have Netflix premium and a Dolby Atmos compatible LG TV, and the surround is pretty good - though don't expect the same overhead effects as a cinema.

I'm currently using the Q950T soundbar and considering replacing it with the LG SN11RG.
You can fix the wifi interference by changing your router channel and network from 2.4ghz to 5ghz if the soundbar supports it.

      • Curious about why you're considering switching? I'm still on the fence.

        • +1

The rear speakers just don't cut it, majority of the time they're too low and only effective in Surround mode with Atmos content. Sub is pretty weak too. I recently bought the CX 65 and had to use a wooden shelf to raise the height of the TV as the soundbar was blocking it. I've also read that SN11RG has better compatibility with the CX and much better Atmos. I guess I'll find out soon

          • +1

@koalafied: There is an update for that. Have tried the sn11. Doesnt even come close.

            Dont do it mate

            • @subdaman: Oops…just bought it today lol
I can guarantee it'll be better than the Samsung. I've put the Q950T up for sale

      • Yes - and that's the problem, the SN11RG doesn't support switching channels.

    • +1

I never had interference issue, modem 4 meters away, Google hub max 1 meter away from rear speaker and sub, no issues.
Google assistant a bit annoying at times, however now I cannot set it up through google home app, can not hook it to my Wi-Fi.
Have seen some people saying what koalafield suggested re wi-fi

  • Thinking either this or samsung q950t.
For those who have samsung one, I read that it is buggy, is it true?
Even the salesman at harvey told me to get LG instead because samsung rears / sub dropping out constantly at the shop..

The consensus seems to point samsung sound is better quality than LG but if it is buggy whats the point.. it will be annoying..

    • I've had the Q950T for 3 months and never experienced any dropouts with the rear speakers, however as mentioned in the post above, the sub is very quiet and only thumps when watching Atmos content. Yes Atmos is great but overall sound quality is not worth the price tag imo. Sound modes are useless as most sound the same apart from Adaptive and Surround. At least with LG you get AI Room Calibration and better Atmos. Anyway, I'll post back once I get it in 2 days. I've listed the Q950T for sale.

      • Thanks mate. Will be keen to know what you think of the LG esp. vs the Samsung.

How much are you selling the Samsung for btw if I may know?

        • +1

No worries, I'll keep you updated.
I was looking at getting $1100 for it, 3 momths old so it's still under warranty.
I've mounted the rear speakers on Vebos floor stands which cost $325 for the pair. Comes with soundbar, subwoofer, rear speakers, floor stands, remote and user manual. No box unfortunately as I misplaced it when moving. Located in VIC if you're interested in testing it out before buying

        • +3

Received the SN11RG today, let me just say the quality is mind blowing compared to the Q950T. Sub can be heard at all times unlike the Samsung where it only turned on in adaptive/surround mode in Atmos movies.

I'm not sugar coating the LG, it's my honest opinion. I think due to the fact it's 770W total power compared to Q950T 546W the sound is better overall. I asked for my friends opinion and he also said the LG was noticeably louder, crisp, overhead sounds are much more immersive, especially the rear speakers you can hear all the little details even when the content is non-Atmos/4K. Rear speakers are also a bit bigger than Q950T.

The only thing I disliked was the remote, it feels very cheap and doesn't have that premium feel to it like Samsung's does.

I'm satisfied with LG and can highly recommend it again and again

@koalafied: Thanks for the review mate.
Do you know if it can upscale/upmix e.g. tv sound to 7.1.4 ch?
More importantly 5.1 source to 7.1.4 since I have lots of 5.1 content

            Cheers

            • +1

@OzFrugie: No problems :) I don't watch TV so I can't say, but having researched the up mixing feature it says the following:
'It upmixes regular 2-channel, 5.1-channel, or even 7.1-channel soundtracks to add overhead sound information.'
              Cheers!

          • @koalafied: Interesting, I Still can’t get 4K pass through for HDR/DV @60hz. Bought HDMI 2.1 cable still no good, thinking of returning mine

            • @BaarOzGain: Hmm, what are you trying to achieve? I'll see if I can come up with a solution. Also what make is the TV and HDMI cable?

              • @koalafied: Trying to get DV/HDR @60hz whilst having Dolby Atmos, atm I can have one or the other as the pass through won’t work, best I get is 4K SDR. TV is X93E sony. Going from Apple TV straight to TV, I get both DV and HDR @60hz no issues but not through the soundbar. If I go through TV and ARC to soundbar no Atmos as I don’t have eARC, soundbar shows Dolby Digital or audio

                • +1

@BaarOzGain: Ahhh makes sense now. The problem lies within ARC, since the TV doesn't support eARC you won't get a higher bitrate than 5.1 and it's tricky passing DV & HDR without it especially through AppleTV.

I had the exact problem prior to upgrading my TV. You may need the Arcana adapter, it tricks the input into thinking it supports eARC. Pricey but it's the best solution as of yet, plus it beats spending more money on a new TV just to have eARC support.
                  https://hdfury.com/product/4k-arcana-18gbps/

"If you love your ARC but aren’t getting Atmos/TrueHD for whatever reason
(no eARC TV, Apple TV doesn’t like HDMI-ARC, regular HDMI-ARC can’t pass TrueHD, etc.), Arcana is what you need. In a nutshell, it tricks your soundbar into thinking it’s connected to an eARC TV giving you full access to all the audio formats your source(s) can output."
