Would love to get a couple of recommendations for a new AV Receiver.
The last AV Receiver I purchased was my venerable Onkyo TX-SR606 back in 2008. Its still going, the front screen doesn't work anymore and for some reason when you press the Setup button it just flashes the TV screen and goes back to what you were doing. Needless to say, its time for an upgrade.
With an amp from 2008, I have it paired with a 5.1 set of Jamo S606's with the SUB300. An absolute favourite of the era. Honestly I'm not a massive audiophile and these still work really well, so I see no need to upgrade them.
I have a budget of $1500~, I'm sure I could squeeze a little extra if need be. But would like to stick in the budget.
Plugged into it will be a Nvidia Shield TV Pro. I'm not really a console gamer, if I want to play on the couch I find Gamestream with the Geforce video card pretty great. That said, I may consider a PS5 in the future but its unlikely. Reading around I can see that the new consoles are causing all sorts of compatibility issues from a futureproofing perspective with the current crop of AV Receivers.
My wife would also like to plug her Record Player in, its a Project Debut Carbon. I assume that might mean we need something that can take the Ground Wire too (phono??).
Outside of those two devices nothing else would be plugged in beyond the TV – being a Sony 55" Sony X8500H which will ideally be upgraded to an OLED of decent value at 65" in the medium term future (4K essential).
The speaker locations in the room aren't perfect but the old Onkyo had a little microphone setup (Audyssey) that helped a lot. So that feature would be desired too.
Outside of the above, we mostly watch movies and Netflix.
I don't have any brand loyalty and I'm open to ordering online (probably not from overseas though). It appears that JB doesn't stock a lot these days (weird, they used to have an entire wall of receivers).
So far the Yamaha RX-V6A comes up a lot.
So hopefully that about covers it.
STR-DN1080 is known as the commonly known go-to flagship, worth looking into as can be had much cheaper nowadays.
