LG V30+ Some People Can't Call?

OK bit of a headscratcher. I have an LGV30+ and has been working fine but lately some people can't call, the phone just disconnects immediately without ringing. Sometimes I get a 'missed call' icon but not always. The people can text me NP and I can call them back NP. I checked that I haven't blocked any numbers and have done a cache reset. Other people can call me just fine. I can can think of 3 people who can't call me at all and given that consistency it makes me think it's a phone problem rather than a network problem.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Should I try a factory reset (pita)? Phone is only about 18 months old.

Cheers

  • Have you tried a reset network settings?

If so I think a factory reset will be only option. (set aside an hour and munch on your pita bread)

  • Just tried resetting network settings, no good. :(

    • Factory reset it is I'm afraid

      • OKies brb……..

        • Here from you soon. Fingers crossed.

          Don't forget the pita bread.

  • It’s not the phone it’s the network.

I had the same problem with 3 phones at home, all different makes.
The same symptoms you had and started when Telstra upgraded their towers near me.
Lodged a fault and months later after it escalated to what ever level techs that monitored and logged calls etc it then came good.
All to do with upgrades for 5g I believe. I did get a lot of rebates to my bills for this.

Also some areas the 3G is being turned off, so phones that don’t have VoLTE can’t make or receive calls anymore. Which meant our LG v20, OPPO r11s, and Huawei P20pro had no calling in around 6 towns that we visited when travelling around Qld outback a month back.

    • Cheers, yeah they have been playing with the towers lately but I get the same problem if I'm away from home?

(The factory reset didn't help either btw. :( )

      • It was happening around the Gold Coast for me. Noticed it mostly near home but was happening all around.
Sometime short calls were fine so I thought no problems but it was random. It could be instant no call, or it could be a few minutes in a call and then just drop.

        • Ok I'll look into it further. Telstra though???? Pray for me everyone, I'm going in and if I'm not back by dawn, call the president.

Disable Wi-FI and see if it makes a difference. (Make sure Mobile Data is on)
Make sure you are connected to the correct APN profile in the SIM Settings
Take a screen shot of your SIM Card Status (Censor any sensitive data like EID, IMEI and MAC)

    • That's interesting, in the SIM status it says My phone number "unknown"?

      • That's pretty common. What does [Mobile Voice Network Type] report? LTE?

        • LTE

(I've got Telstra on chat: "It appears there may be an issue with the service in the Telstra server and I'll need to escalate this for further investigation.
The BOH team will assist the fault and will contact you within 24 to 48 hours to resolve the issue permanently,") Fingers crossed.

            @EightImmortals: That’s how mine started.

And then, we’ll get back to you 24/48… I’d have to chase it up, then again then again…

            Good luck.

            • @PVA: So how did they eventually fix it?

              • @EightImmortals: Magic I think.

No idea, just after months of following up and them saying they were working on it, one day all or three phones worked fine.

                • @PVA: OK, cheers. Shall start praying then. :)

@EightImmortals: It was a pain, basically the phone service was unusable.
Text and data were fine just making receiving calls.

Go through Telstra and complain, and keep complaining and ask for rebates to the bill.

  • Bumpity. After getting nowhere I managed to get hold of a spare phone to try and when I pop my SIM into the spare phone the people who couldn't call me now can.

Is my phone possessed or just buggered?

Damn thing isn't even 2 years old yet.

(Edit. OK if I switch the phone to 3G only then the people can call me. Telstra are trying to blame LG but the phone has been working fine on 4G for about 18 months?)

  • Seeing the same thing on my V30+. First noticed it this week. Last week I reset APN settings in an attempt to fix the SMS problem (which was Google's fault).

    • I've left mine on 3G only and it's working OK. Get the same SMS problems last week too.

  • Oh well, will try that if this problem continues. Thanks for trying the factory reset… wasn't looking forward to that!

  • Did you find a solution to this? I have the same problem. I believe it's only iPhones that can't call me

I've tried factory reset, redoing APN, changing the call app. I had the same issues with the SMS the other day too.

I'd prefer not to have to run on 3g only

    • Nope. I've left mine on 3G only and it works. I still think it's a Telstra problem TBH as my son seems to be having a similar issues with his phones and neither of them are LG's.

The SMS problem might have been linked to a google stuff up, they did something on the backend which borked a lot of SMS apps. Scary how much power these single entities have over our day to day lives.

  • The caller that my phone didn't work with was using an iPhone. I guess that VoLTE is end-to-end and the iPhone must be using it in a mode that requires handset support at both ends. When I fail to receive an incoming call (1/2 a ring and then missed call), I can immediately and successfully call back from my end. So something mustn't be negotiating the connection properly when the call is initiated by an iPhone.

The SMS breakage is covered at:

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/12/google-breaks-sms-on…

Given how widespread it must have been, I'm surprised at how little media coverage it got.

    • Actually you might be onto something with the iphone as now that you mention it at least 3 of the people who couldn't call me were using iphones and people who could get through were not.

  • Bumpity. Got a call from Telstra to day saying this was a known LG problem as the LG guys broke Volte with a recent software update (not sure which one). Are you guys that having problems also using LG's?

    • +1

I'm using an LG V30+. No recent software updates on this thing! See this thread:

      ;-)

      • Yeah I mentioned to the CSA that there had been no OS updates recently but she didn't have any further info so I'm assuming the problem is with one of the LG apps? Anyway her solution for now was turn off VOLTE at her end (doesn't bother me) do I can still use 4G if I wanted to until LG sorts it out.

        • The only possibly relevant thing that gets updated is the Carrier Services app (same app that broke SMS before Xmas) from Google. Perhaps there's an incompatibility with (some) LG phones somewhere in there. I would guess that this could have been dormant there for a while and only noticed as Telstra pushes people off 3G and over to VoLTE. I don't remember seeing the VoLTE notification icon until recently but I also have a terrible memory for unimportant things. You would also guess that other countries would have had VoLTE enabled for quite a while so this problem should be solved. Who knows.?

So the Telstra CSA was able to simply turn off VoLTE for your phone number? That might end up being useful for me too…

          • +1

@bcg: Yep that's what she did. I don't really use the phone for web stuff so not having 4G wasn't an issue but she turned off volte anyway until the issue is fixed.

  • Having this issue with my V30 too. Thought I was going crazy! Wife on iphone. Both using boost prepaid.

To be honest I'm sick of the phone and it's not running very well with very poor battery life. So this is kind of last straw. Currently looking for a good deal for a newer phone. But will try switching off 4g in the meantime
