VW Multivan on Order - Is Price Still Negotiable?

I'm looking at a new VW Multivan 2021 model. Delivery times are crazy - it's a standard model (Multivan Comfortline Premium), completely stock standard. Not a limited release or anything…..and when I first enquired even back in September they said the delivery will be between March and May 2021! Yay offshore supply-chains.

Price being quoted is around the $65k mark including the on-road costs. They're asking for a small deposit to lock in guaranteed delivery of a car. But I want to a better deal, and the dealer doesn't seem to want to move on price?

This is my first experience with VW and this model of car, let alone this whole Covid/supply chain issue which seems to be changing their whole sales approach. Whatever happened to good ol' negotiation in order to seal the deal? Or is this just this make and model??

  • Summer's nearly here and demand for cars and boats has skyrocketed (esp after lockdown and now returning to normality) while supply is still constrained making people hold onto prices and not negotiate much. No real reason to I suppose.

I'm in the market for both so really feeling it compared to say 6 months ago…

Supply and demand, you have zero leverage towards the dealer dropping their pants on the price.

      Supply and demand,

I wish this was taught more in school. When you get your head around this simple concept a lot of things in the world make a lot more sense

      • Yeah - it's definitely one thing I took away from school….but I also know that sales people need to make budgets to get bonuses so I figure that if I'm on their books as a potential lead at the end of the month that they'll give me a call. But nothing. Hardball isn't working for me.

        • The problem is the demand is high right now, so there is no need for them to negotiate. It's the same with tradies right now, they have work coming out their ears because everyone is spending their travel budgets on renos, so they can quote ridiculous prices for even the smallest jobs.

  • The new and used car maket is very inflated right now.. COVID means less stock, so higher prices all round. I've just bought a car and had to make peace with paying 15-20% above prices 12 months ago.

  • If you are after a 4motion they probably have you over a barrel even more so, as I'm not sure if there is even anything else similar available.

    • Just after a 2WD. So not a 'rare' vehicle but I guess it's still a bit niche in comparison to a car like a Prado etc..

  • If you are set on VW then you got limited options. Good sales people always can tell those who are sold regardless of price.

  • Every VW in Perth only has one working headlight.

I mean brand new expensive ones.

    All of them.

    Why?

    • Every?

It is same same as with indicators and speedometers. VWs are famous for optional or non operational standard features.

It’s always negotiable until you pay the deposit. Having said that, the negotiation seems to be limited to ‘this is the price, do you want it or not?’

While they have limited supply they aren’t losing much only collecting a deposit. They probably won’t even make your vehicle until feb at this rate.

  • You need to talk to more than one dealer and set a sensible price you are happy to pay or be prepared to walk away for a while. Also, maybe look at what they have as floor stock and be prepared to compromise on specification.

    • There's literally no floor stock, which is probably the issue. And in terms of specification, unfortunately the step down is basically a tradie van. Maybe I should just get a Prado, haha.
