Outdoor Home Garden Lighting Ideas

Hi

I am looking at setting up some lighting for my front garden, in particular to light up my Manchurian pear trees so thinking spotlight will be ideal.

I have seen the Philips and Holman rgb options which I quite like the idea of being able to change the colours on a regular basis to mix it up.

What do I need and what would you recommend?

Thanks!

Benny

  • Have you got power to where you’d need to get it? I bought some solar lights from kmart for a party once and they were horrible.

The hue backyard lights are cool but you’d need a sparky to make it look neat or run cable I’d say.

    • Yeah I have power right next to the spot that I want to put them so I won’t need extensions etc

Thanks for the feedback regarding the Kmart lights, I don’t really want to get a sparky to install them as it will add up the total cost pretty quick

  • I only have 12v lighting outside now. It's safe and low power consumption. Solar just isn't good enough and they have a short life. Go with 12v.

I bought 12v power supply/transformer, cable and 3w LED12v lights from eBay. It's 12v so you can install it yourself in any position as long as there is a power point near.
I have both green and warm led white spot lights which are more than enough to light up feature trees.

When you get lights, make sure the power supply/transformer is suitable for the load. For example a 2 amp power supply can support a maximum of 24 watts of lighting.

    • Got any links to ones you've bought on eBay? Plenty of options but knowing one that's been used/tested is useful.

  • +1

Dont waste your money on solar
    Buy yourself something like this
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/hpm-12v-105w-garden-light-transf…

hunt down some Garden Lighting Cable in the length you need
    https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p233452…

then however many Low voltage Lights you want
    https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p233452…

Just don't exceed 80% of the wattage the transformer is rated at
The one i linked would be 84 watts maximum
Put it on a timer and your set

    • Good info!
I dicked about with some solar lights as I didn't need much light, just enough to get a glow on in the back yard and prevent it from being a black hole at night time. I found you get what you pay for, so after a lot of trial and error finally found some that work well for me here.
If I was doing it again (or when these ones crap out) I'll look into a 12v setup.
