Using b2bpay to pay tax debt & meet minimum spend on credit card

Is it possible to use b2bpay to pay ATO liabilities to meet the minimum spend on a new credit card, to get bonus sign-up points?

The terms and conditions of the credit card explicitly rule out ATO payments, but it's my understanding that's one of the main benefits of using a service like b2bpay?

  • what is b2bpay?
back to bpay? what is back to bpay?
read the term and condition, most will says government, and bpay are not permitted. some even say "bpay or similar including billpaypost" i am afraid what they mean is paying ANY KIND OF BILLs. and of course government is a big no no so you are crossing 2 lines.
im in the same boat… looking for any other ideas

which CC are you doing now? im doing st george and coles master.
the coles CC is fine i can do it slowly, low amount - but i want to get done with st george asap $900

    • b2bpay has nothing to do with bpay. they're like a payment service provider, so for example b2bpay will pay your ATO debt, then charge you for that service on your credit card. so it kind of 'washes' the transaction to appear like a regular transaction rather than an ATO transaction.

      • oh wow didnt know ! well… just calculate the fee but im down with it
        checking now
btw, just an idea, you should provide link and make it clear for some people at least they can click the link and learn what is b2bpay

        • sorry i assumed it was more widely known. looks like you've done a bit of reading up on it since though. you gonna try it?

          • @jaypee06: of course i will! no brainer re: the fees, but i just worry if this is legit website or not.
as long they really pay my bills, no other concern
once i get the bonus cashback (and spend it), i will cancel the card anyway -

its weird. on every credit card cash back deal, when people crying for help on how to meet the minimum spending thing,
no one ever mentioned about this.

  • +1

Front page of their site seems to provide the answer…..

"Earn full card points on ATO, Government, Telco, insurance and utilities"

    • Yeah, I'm just wondering if my credit card provider has caught on and will automatically deem any payments to b2bpay as an ineligible spend.

      • Why? The reason that they reduce the points earn on those transactions is that the merchant gets strategic or government interchange rates down at 0.6% or below, which doesn't give the issuer enough to actually pay rewards on. b2bpay etc do not have those agreements - they're paying 1.5% or even 2.5%, giving the issuer ample margin.

  • Yes, you can use this service but there is a card processing fee which significantly eats into the benefits of having points.

    • i can see Visa / Mastercard standard cards:1.2%
in my st george vertigo card, need to spend $900 so fee is $10.80
that is nothing as i will get minimum $200 or if lucky, $300
and yes, i have loads of bills to pay

    • Yeah, I am only planning to use it to meet the minimum spend on my new credit card, to get the bonus sign-up points. Otherwise I agree that the fees erode a lot of the benefits.

      • OK…if its to meet the min spend which you otherwise could not satisfy then this is OK.

so, before continue, this website is legit, right?

    • From the site it all basically looks like how to sign a business up to accept their payment system.

I am need of this kind of thing as well but wanting to give them a BPAY bill to pay or similar. I know there are Sniip, but do people know of any others?

  • ups.. need to have ABN to open account with b2bpay :(

    • Shouldn't be hard to get one.

You need one to apply as an uber eats driver so you could apply for an ABN on the premise that you're intending to use it for that.

      • i dont get your joke but agree easy and free to apply.

        • It wasn't a joke. I just know some people are uneasy about applying for an ABN as you could be making a false declaration to the ATO if you're not conducting a business.

But yes, it's very quick and easy to get one.

  • i tried SNIIP to pay council rate hoping citibank will not see it as council, but the citibank statement is showing Liverpool City
wtf ???? i thought the purpose of using this is we pay sniip and sniip pays the bill ? so the bank will see we make payment to a service not government

    • No, Sniip is different and works as kind of a payments provider. They don't pay the bill on your behalf.

      • their website saying this :

With many cards, you earn no points or reduced points when paying bills.
When paying through Sniip, you can earn full points from your rewards programs on the majority of bills.

        Earn full points on:
        Energy bills
        ATO tax bills
        Rent (DEFT) and Body Corporate
        Phone bills
        Internet bills
Insurance – car, health, home and contents
        School fees
        Rates and water
        Car rego
        …and more!

        • Careful on that "majority" bit, which is the kicker. I need to clarify my statement a bit more, as Sniip has two ways of paying - if you simply snapshot a BPAY barcode and pay via Sniip, it is in fact just them making the BPAY payment on your behalf and then charging you as a regular merchant (full points, yay).

However, if you snap a Sniip barcode (what you see on council bills) then they act like a payments provider and no points for you - Sniip actually has a different arrangement with councils. I've never gotten a point out of it (and therefore stopped bothering).

          • @[Deactivated]: i dont get your explanation above. to me both scenarios will get me the same result (ie bank see that i pay the original biller, ie ATO, or council) and therefore defeat my purpose as i wont get points/not meeting the minimum spending criteria (t&c: cant pay government bodies)

then why i need to pay sniip if what they do is just making bpay payment on my behalf, (i can do the same from my cc website, free)
i never see sniip barcode on council bills.
what i done: on sniip app, search/enter the bpay provider id and reference and amount manually

so how to make the bank see that i make payment to sniip ? (and in the background, sniip pays my council bill separately, hidden from bank eyes) ?

    • Why did you go with sniip? I used b2bpay and it worked perfectly.

      • because of ABN requirement with b2bpay.
duh stupid me donated $8 for nothing to sniip and now i have less bills to pay to meet ANZ cc requirement.
so with b2bpay what does it says on your credit card statement? does it reveal the original biller name ?

        • Actually it did say ATO haha and I called Westpac to check if I meet the criteria for the bonus points and he said yeah that $3k transaction was what tipped me over the minimum spend. And I stupidly asked "even if it says ATO?" and he was like oh yeah that is strange, normally it shouldn't include ATO payments but I can see here you've met the minimum spend and the bonus points will be paid on the next statement period.

Once the QFF points were credited I closed that card down

          • @jaypee06: Hmmm so maybe all the services like this b2bpay sniip are the same, they will still include the original biller name…. So confused now I wish we have a representative from one of them here to clarify

            • @CyberMurning: ChiMot did you end up getting your points after using Sniip?

I'm looking to use Sniip for a VIC Rego bill that is clearly not counted towards minimum spend on an ANZ Card.

              • @victimize: i asked/called before using if they will shows the council name they said no
                but
paid one council bill and the council name is showing in the credit card statement few days later.
dont know about points but i m using this to get the bonus points (new card) - the condition says payment to government isnt eligible - council is government - so i dont want to risk it.

                • @CyberMurning: yeah ive got a new credit card im churning at the moment too (ANZ Black Rewards) which is why im in the same boat as you haha.

                  • @victimize: you can try small amount (can always split/part payment the council bills) do it and then call the bank asking how much more you need to achieve the minimum spending for the bonus. from their answer you can figure out if that council one is okay/not.
or just straight asking that particular payment of xxx i made on yyy, are you counting it or not? if not, why?
                    something like that.

i tried with 2-3 different services like this b2bpay, yakpay, and…. cant remember all the names,
all the same. at the end i feel stupid, donating $10-ish dollars to those companies where i can do bpay for free.

                    • @CyberMurning: thanks for the advice ChiMot, appreciate you my fellow card churner.

                      • @victimize: I use YP or sniip for all my bills.. Full earn everytime

    • -1

interestingly i found Sniip now able to accept ZIP via GPAY. but it's the 1.5% Visa/Mc surcharge .. whether it's worth it to break even
