Huawei P30 Took a Dive - Fix for $$$ or Replace with ?

Hi all,
Whilst moving house my Huawei P30 (regular, not pro) took a dive on the van floor. It had screen protectors etc and it seemed to have one purple pixel which I didn't think was too bad. Well by the end of the day that purple pixel grew to completely cover the screen and now its black. The alarm still goes off though so thats nice (no way to turn it off though).

Anyway.. is it worth repairing it? A quick google shows a screen replacement is going to be about $200+ just for the part. Another option is to just suck it up and buy another phone. I can't get one on a plan as I just started a BYOD plan with Optus for 12 months. Anyway, here is what I'm looking for:

  • Sub $600AUD
  • Equally as good (or just slightly less good) camera as on the P30 - this is probably not doable but the price + good camera are my #1 requirements. Everything else.. meh. I'm the primary historian in our family :D and I can't carry around a DSLR so the phone has to have a good camera. The P30 has the best I've ever seen.

I'm thinking maybe the Pixel series might satisfy this requirement but I've been out of the phone market for a while now. Of course I will do my research but as this is a distress purchase I need to get pretty much now I thought I'd ask you guys.

What do you think?

  • Pixel 3 or 4 is where you want to look at.

I had a Pixel 3 and it was great for photos, however it couldn't be used as a phone. https://www.tomsguide.com/us/pixel-3-call-quality-issues,new…

Not sure if they have fixed it with the newer Pixels, if they have I would consider it as the photos were really superb.

      • iAgree. I had a pixel 3 too. Great photos, shit phone otherwise, the battery life is the worst I have ever seen. Sold mine after 4 months of use.

I'm impressed with the camera on my OPPO A91, it has four lenses on the back – 48-megapixel, 8-megapixel and two 2-megapixel lenses.

You can pick one up for a tad under $500, less if you have GGC.

Any chance you paid for it with an AMEX that has smartphone screen insurance?

    • oh man how great would that be if it was? Sadly no. I will keep this in mind though for the next one. Thank you for posting.

honest question, Why dont people put protective cases on their devices. a $10 cover saves a $999 phone.

Like if i was to buy a phone lets say online and it doesnt come with the case, i will order the case and not take it out of the box until the case arrives, no case no use phone? simple, the amount of times i have dropped my phone on the tiles when trying to sleep is amazing and each time it has always survived even once it was on the other side of the bed and didnt know and went to make the bed, lifted up the covers bang phone goes flying across the room, no issue

    • I've had phases of not using any case on my phone. Just felt better while holding it (felt a lot sleeker, lighter, gave me more appreciation of my phone which I otherwise would've not felt if I kept using a bulky case). Of course, those phases usually ended with a scratch somewhere on my phone's body in which case I promptly covered it with a bulky case again.

    • It had a case, and a glass cover too :( Totally agree, for that sort of $$ you want to protect your phone. This.. did not work.

    • It was nice that rhe oppo a91 came with a case. It was unexpected for me as I have ordered another case with the phone!

    • op said "It had screen protectors etc " I though the etc meant a case?

If you sell your phone with a broken screen remember to delete you photos and stuff

I would pay to repair your phone if repair is sub $250.

P30 was released in 19Q1. From experience the software support will end 2 years from that, with security update until 22Q1. For a cheapie phone I would upgrade in a heart beat, but your P30 has pretty good spec in terms of network support and performance. This phone will last me end of 2021. I'd put that $350 from your budget towards a newer 5G phone in 2022.

If you going to get a new phone now anyway, get one released after 20Q2 (so you have another good year of software update) and have comparable performance. Don't have one in mind but have used the Nokia 8 series and now using Oppo.

Been quoted $430 to fix. Looks like I'm going to have to go the new phone route.

Oppo Reno 10x Zoom or Reno 5G should fit the brief if you can find stock.

  • New P30 Lite 256gb is selling for $287 with Amazon prime at present

I would highly urge you to repair your phone. Best is to send it in to Huawei for repair as they will do the highest quality repair and it is sometimes cheaper as well. The only downside is they will wipe your phone.
If you have data you care about and cannot easily access you can try using a USB-C Hub and connect phone to a monitor and use mouse/keyboard to control.

As others said, a cheapie phone sure not worth it; but your P30 is still being sold for $600+ by places and I can tell you from experience that none of the cheap phones will come anywhere near your P30 for camera quality :)

    • I don't mind about the wiping as everything was backed up to the cloud anyway. I will contact Huawei and see if they can do a repair any cheaper than the $430 I've been quoted. Thank you for the suggestion.

      • Who quoted the $430?

I was getting similar quotes from regular repair places and then Huawei came in about half the price, definitely give them a shot!

        • Some place I randomly googled. I have submitted the phone to Huawei and they'll quote me on the repair. Can't hurt right - there's still 9 days or so til Black Friday :)
