NSW - Simply Energy for Electricity and Gas

I read electricity prices are coming down, but my bills are exactly the opposite.

So it's time to look for better deals.

Simply Energy was suggested here: https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

It also offers further discount for NRMA members which is nice.

Thought it's pretty good until I read it on Product Reviews: https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/simply-energy

Are they really that bad? But they are on par with other majors.

Only people with bad experiences leave reviews on those sites. The cheapest for me when I looked was nectr. They also have up to $150 off your second bill if you use a referral code, you can get this through the ozbargain referral system.

    • Nice find. Wasn't sure if they would stack referral code with the new customer credit but reading from this they do!

    • Nectr doesn't seem to be listed as a referral company:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/list_of_referral_links

      • I have asked for Nectr to be added to the referral system, let's see what they say. They have a pretty good referral system, $50 for referrer, $50 for referree and yes, this stacks up with other offers they have (I used my friend's code when I signed up and I received their other offers going)

    • Does nectr offer Gas as well?

      Just checked… They don't :(

  • I'm with nectr and recommend them. They replied to my emails quickly when I closed my previous account with them. Their bills are also easy to understand.

  • I've been with Simple Energy electricity for a few years on their original NRMA discount (which was more generous than now) and happy with it. The only two issues I had was from one of their pushy sales people who phoned to try switching me to another plan, and one of their bills which imposed a late payment fee three weeks before the due date (??) which was easily fixed by their call centre.

  • Should habitually switch almost every year even if it does not save you every time. Keeps these companies on their toes and everyone will collectively benefit.

  • Unless your offer price is fixed for set amount of time, the price will be updated around July each year…

I was with Energy Australia beginning of the year. Mid year I checked the revised price if I choose to stay. Found out the supply charge is increased by a big factor. So I switched to Click for now until better offer comes up.

Unfortunately nectr doesn't offer solar feedin for ACt/NSW

  • I was with Simply Energy from May 2019 to Aug 2020. I had no issues with any aspect of the relationship and they were one of the few that could put me onto a flat rate.

Moved to Click in Aug 2020. Supposed to be Flat Rate but it's TOU which is really annoying.

  • They surely make it difficult to compare. Some suppliers have peak and off peak within seasonal rates.

Sometimes I think the rates are designed to be complex.

  • Sorry put my comment in a wrong place

  • For people that search SimplyEnergy on OzBargain, for future reference:
I can tell you about my current experience with SimplyEnergy (currently moving away from them).
TL;DR : estimated usage was more than actual. Yet SimplyEnergy charges me again for usage instead of refunding me.

    Longer version:
They sent me a final bill.
Previous bill had an estimated read (higher than actual), they now have an actual read for the final bill.
So they see the value is negative, but they charged for gas I didn't use. I expected a refund of the gas I didn't use. Wrong!

They took a random "Base usage" value (not based on any calculation, not that I can deduct from the final bill).
So I end up being asked to pay an additional $10 of usage (instead of getting a $20 refund of the usage I already paid for).

Basically paying twice for gas that I still didn't use. New Gas company has the same actual read, so I will pay a 3rd time for that consumption with the new company bills me the next cycle.

Raised it twice to SimplyEnergy: billing team saw nothing wrong, and said final bill is correct (they took more than 1 week and never provided me with this conclusion; I only found out because I raised it a second time).
I was advised that the bill was still due for original due date, no extension would be provided.

On the phone now for 45minutes, the person understand it's negative so I should get a refund, but since it's already a final bill and account is "closed" they can't help me further, and has to be raised to the same billing team that already said it was normal twice!

Basically they still can't help me, but the person was able to put the bill on hold.

I would expect that with estimated reads there's always the possibility that they have to correct or refund on the next bill, apparently SimplyEnergy's system doesn't have this?
