I have my hosting and domains with them and they have been very reliable. I rarely have issues with FTP, no more than with other hosts I've used. There hasn't been anything I've needed to do in CPanel that I couldn't do, but I guess everybody's needs are different.
Who'd you jump ship to?
I've recently switched across to Ventra for hosting as well and found the CPanel features to be pretty good, and I'm coming from a host where I had pretty decent SSH access so am used to a level of tinkering.
I also pushed my sites up via FTP and it worked fine. Obviously early days, but so far so good for me.

Far far better than some big name providers
I swapped over to them about 2 years ago for website hosting for the company that I work for. They are really good in terms of support. They usually get back to you in less than an hour.
They have some occasional good deals and good to support local but they don't half spam the hell out of you with constant e-mail gibberish.
Had hosting with them for a while, rock solid but very limited CPanel options (and FTP never worked) compared to others so jumped ship.
