1500W Planer Thicknesser $299 at ALDI

890

Finally on again. The real bargain will be if Bunnings discounts their Ryobi equivalent since they don't have any competing Ozito offering, so I'm holding out for that. See dealbot's post for full catalogue.

  • 1500w
  • twin blades operating at up to 10,000rpm
  • 318mm max width
  • 10-158mm height

  • Is there something wrong if someone doesn't understand what this does but is still considering buying it? Im asking for a friend.

    • yep, an ozbargain buy now think later problem. but some would say it's a blessing.

    • As much as I love a good tool deal especially if the Ryobi is dropped to match, it does mean less 1 for someone else who would actually use it.

I mean $29 for a blower or hedge trimmer that gets left in the box is one thing, $299 left in the box is a a lot more wasted.

      • +6

Nah, it means it's a $150 bargain for someone else who buys it second hand but unused on Gumtree or Facebook in about four years when the first person finally relents and realises they don't even have any pallets, let alone the time, skill or enduring inclination to make their own weathered coffee table when they can buy one for fifty bucks.

        • Hahaha that gave me a laugh

    • +2

Ozbargain, saving you money on things you don't need.

  • Made in China so no deal from me.

    • +1

What would you recc thats not m.i.c?

      • +2

        Metabo

        • After looking into it it seems a lot of metabo tools are made in china.

          • @Jenny Death: Some are. AFAIK, their thickener is not, and if it is, there are other brands out there that are not.

    • -3

Perhaps you shouldn't be looking at OzB at all. Even Apple products are MIC. Last I checked your children has MIC toys.

      • +5

Since China caused Covid 19, and their subsequent denials and attempted bullying of Australia and other democratic countries, I have gone out of my to not buy Chinese-made products - despite the cost. Obviously, this is not always possible but I'm giving it a red hot crack. So if a mic planer costs $299, but a German one costs $900, I'll buy the German-made one. Buying Chinese-made shit. just because it's the cheapest has got us into the mess we're in now and it's time for it stop IMO. Chinese people and their country are great but their communist government is pure poison. They are immature, overly aggressive and pathetic. Xi is a petulant man child. The least we have to do with them the better, and if I can give them less of my dollars - even better again.

I have no Apple products - I have more sense than money!

        • The problem is not MIC, its the company that used Chinese factories. You should be against the companies choosing to make their shit in China. Talking about barking the wrong tree… Will see how far one can go not buying those brands… I priorities Buy Australian Made and Australian brands. At least we are indirectly employing local people!

          • +1

@justfrog: I feel like that achieves the same thing really, both are boycotting chinese products and buying from other countries.

          • +3

@justfrog: I hear you but let's be realistic, not everything can be made in Australia by Australian-owned companies. I also try and buy Australian-made, but I'm not going to be able to buy a locally built phone, TV or power drill. There are also plenty of Australian-owned businesses that manufacture nothing in Australia, although probably used to. I don't really see why they should be supported so much, yet a foreign owned company that manufactures here, should be. I'm just a small cog in a big machine, and not buying Chinese-made is my small way of saying stuff them.

            • +3

@R4: I hear you - and respect you for it. Keep up the good work. United we can make a difference, but we MUST be united.

  • Thicknesses imagine plank of old weathered wood , throw it through a thicknesses, it'll take enough wood off too make it look like freshly sawn plank..

  • I absolutely want a thicknesser! I want the DeWalt one but happy to settle for Ryobi if it goes on sale. Just have to make sure it doesn’t snipe so much

    • Dewalt is the one to get but different universe in terms of price.

  • The bench press drill they are advertising along with this looks like a Bosch PBD40 copy - for half the price.

Anyone had experience with one of these?

    • +1

It's a variant of the Scheppach DP60 here. Google for that. ALDI UK had it selling last month so there's some feedback already on it and some youtube videos to check it out. Seems like good value. If I didn't already have a bench drill press, I'd be tempted. Hell, I'm tempted anyway! MUST.RESIST.

      • The Aldi UK Scheppach drill press has a different spec to the Aldi AU Ferrex drill press. 900w vs 710w. Two speed gearbox vs single speed gearbox. Digital depth sensor vs no sensor. Keyless chuck vs keyed chuck.

I managed to get the Bosch equivalent for $246 this time last year.

Wake me up when Bunnings matches the price with Ryobi unit!

  • Can you fit aftermarket spiral blades on either the ryobi or ALDI one?

    • Wouldn't have thought so. You only seem to be able to get those as an aftermarket part for the DeWalt thicknesser and maybe the Metabo one I think. In any event the spiral cutting head (Shelix I think is the brand?) Costs as much as the thicknesser!

      • at which point you might as well get a proper full size one with a spiral head, not a lunchbox one

  • When does Bunnings typically price match Aldi special buys? Is it before or after?

    • +1

Usually before, but this time it has not happened yet! Looks like a line up next Saturday morning. Coffee, trolley, portable chair… check!

  • Anyone know if there is a Bunnings rep here who can shed some light on if the price match will happen or not!

  • Question for those who have used this one or the ryobi equivalent: this does 2 of the 4 surfaces per pass, doesn't it? Also curious how it handles minor bowing in wood. We have a lot of old fence pailings and just wondering if its worth the effort. TIA :)

    • +3

There's only one spinning blade, and it only planes the top surface as it goes through (like basically any other thicknesser). Note the flat metal surface at the base, there is no blade. You flip it over and do the other side, or can stand up wide boards to do the edges.

These things can take out some bowing - but if the bow is really long and extends past the edges of the in/out trays then it might not completely take it out. If you had a regular plane you could roughly take out the high spots on each side to make it generally straight and then run it through this thing to even out the faces.

      • Thanks Alzori, some good info here :)

        • If you want to take out bowing, make a sled (really flat piece of timber like good ply) then put your bowed piece on top. Securely wedge it so it won't rock at all and send it through. Your top face will now be flat and you can flip it upside down and send it through by itself to make the second side parallel.

(There will be snipe at the start and end even with the sled. You can counteract most of that by putting a scrap piece of timber at both ends so the snipe is all in the scrap)

  • No price update from Bunnings yet…

    • No not yet. I wonder if it is worth a try tomorrow at bunnings!

      • I’ve got to head out to another tool store anyway so will swing by to check for sure

  • +2

Doesn't look like Bunnings will be doing a Ryobi price match.

If they are, it will be their best kept secret.

I am kind of surprised Bunnings would match any Aldi tools - it is almost as though are not fully committed.

On one hand you have people that have studied the Aldi catalogue a week or two in advance.

How or why are these people going to know to check out Bunnings to get something at a similar price on that morning?

I did try contacting Bunnings via their contact form for a previously to see if they were going to match an Aldi power saw a few months back - did not even get a response back.

With relation to the Ferrex vs the Ryobi, and I think it has already been said, these look so similar (apart from the paint colour), they would have to be from the same OEM.

    • Spoke to an Aldi store person yesterday evening and was advised no stock in store and none in Victoria. Might come in later.

      • Well that ended up a wrong steer. Stock this morning at forest hill

        • Ditto. Asked at Croydon and they got it at 9pm last night and instant sellout. Few drill presses there at 12pm though.

    • +1

Was in Bunnings this morning - Ryobi is normal price.

      • +3

Yep. Oh well looks like I’ll save a bit more and get the DeWalt… and not from Bunnings

        • Any good tool shop other than the well known - Bunnings, Sydney tools, total tools?

  • +3

I love listening to the experts who obviously haven't got a clue about the subject they are commenting on, these are a generic thicknesser that normally sells for 490-800 dollars with I might add a 1-2 year warranty not the 3 year on offer at Adi. As for Chinese crap comment the DeWalt is made in Taiwan but almost all others are Chinese made.
I own a Dewalt 735 $1300 and snapped up 2 of the Ferrex at Aldi's yesterday (1 for relative) to use it on crap wood pallets etc and use the Dewalt for my "quality work" but if I did not have one i would be lining up to get one.
