Japanese Convenience Stores in Australia

So anyone who has experienced a convenience store in Japan should remember them. Some I remember are “Lawson” & “Family Mart”.

Open 24/7, has delicious recipe fried chicken & other healthy snacks (bento’s etc), instant noodles / hot soup for when it’s cold at night with optional extras.
They also sell desserts, beer and other canned drinks (soda / coffee etc).
And the rest is just stationary / toiletries / batteries / clothing / umbrellas etc.
There are some more special things that I have forgotten but I really do remember walking into one.

Would you like Japanese convenience stores just like in Japan (except with English magazines) to open in Australia Yes or No?

The post might make it seem like the food is “Japanese” like Sushi etc, but I remember the food being mostly cooked / fried / premade and delicious.

I, personally, am not too interested in them as doesn't cater to my needs but wouldn't want to vote No, as not opposed to them. There's no reason we can't have them for those that do enjoy them just like the other Asian shops around.

The problem is likely they'll be too expensive and not profitable enough to survive in the market here. Have no idea how the existing convenience marts survive.

    • but wouldn't want to vote No, as not opposed to them.

Ok thanks, added a ”Maybe so” poll option.

Maybe you are right. I was expecting similar to Japan prices but they will probably be more expensive if they open here.

I was expecting similar to Japan prices…

Not possible. Think about it, shipping products from Japan, most of it like drinks are very heavy and more expensive to ship, then there's customs and taxes, then there's Australian staff salaries and benefits, then there's Australian shop rent, insurances etc etc. Walk around any current Asian shop here and you'll see products priced 3-5x or even more local origin prices. Unless you really crave something in particular, most people would go to Coles/WW/McDonalds/whatever rather than making it a destination buy.

        • I guess it’s a dream more than reality.. but if someone could make it happen with decent prices.. I would say yes please.

  • Yeah, just for the Halloween pumpkin carton drink.

    • I think that's just milk tea

  • I don't think it'd work, unless you are in the city. But then the city has so many of these, you'd have to be providing a very unique proposition.

And I think the main charm for those were they were cheap, and they acted like your local safeway/Coles. They were all reasonably priced for quality good tasting food, as opposed to…coke and big m…and four twenty pies.

Yes now someone else mentioned it I will probably only be interested if the price is close to prices in Japan. If they charging double people will probably walk to $2 7/11 dog or Mac.

Most Japanese stores are pretty expensive here. I think its the import cost, as well as being a bricks and mortar store.

There's a japanese vending machine around Melbourne somewhere and the drink was about 4 dollars. So that's almost double from memory.

  • Yea but I’m sure you know that we don’t have the demand for this sort of thing here. It’s been tried throughout SEA and it does not meet the same standard in Japan.

For those saying that Japanese convenience store products are cheap - they’re actually more expensive than their supermarkets.

Japanese convenience stores are a story of advanced last mile logistics coupled with a loose labour law environment.

We have none of those in Australia.

  • I voted for 24/7

We can’t have nice things in Australia. A convenience store that sold fried chicken and beer 24hrs a day would have to be really expensive otherwise it would just become a cesspool of scumbags listening to shitty music on Bluetooth speakers.

  • I would love to have them here but the prices would need to be as reasonable as the are in Japan which is never going to happen,.

  • Imagine the amount of bums with $5 in their stinky pockets hanging around these stores buying a beer and drinking right outside and begging for another collection of $5 only to repeat that all day
    No thankyou

When ever I'm in Taiwan I always visit those Family Mart 7Eleven for tea eggs. Regardless what time you go you will always find variety of food and drinks.

  • Yes, Asiafy Australia please. We need this country to be Asian.

  • Ichiban 😷

  • Japanese convenience stores often have fresher sushi then most Australian 'Japanese' sushi restaurants.

  • Anyone in Sydney Northshore he sure to drop by Lucky Mart near Artarmon station. This shop is the best Japanese store! They have Bento and Sushi boxes cooked daily. And heaps of cool Japanese grocery.
