The anti-Nvidia/anti-Plex 4K ATMOS TV box?

Hello OzBargain

Looking for an Android TV box that cheaper than Shield Pro that does the following:

4k HDR10 playback via USB
ATMOS support (Kodi app)
DTSX support (Kodi app?)

Need to use in a home that has limited to no internet/streaming connection hence no use of Plex, Netflix etc.

Also don't need gaming.

I know Shield Pro will do the above and lot more but its over $300 and I was looking to spend $200 or below.

Also I have the non-pro Sield but its limited to doing the above via Micro SD card and not usb.

  • Android boxes, like Chinese android boxes uses crappy MediaTek SoC, not be able decode 4K fast enough and support none of the above. You have the second best Android box in the market right now.

Since you have a shield already. Just find a router with USB 3.0 and connect it via 1GBe ethernet and plug HDD into the router. And mount it via shield file sharing. That way you are not plugging in and out all the time when you want to transfer files and not damage the USB ports. Ethernet can handle 4k easy. A router with 3.0 and 1Gps ethernet can be pricey at times.

Like this one Xiaomi router with USB 3.0 for 160 dollars from Banggood.

    • Thanks for this I do have one of these old routers collecting dust, would it work even though its only USB 2.0 ?

      • Yes it can work, uncompressed 4k blu-ray bitrate is approximately 128mbits/sec, usb 2.0 between 20 to 30mb/s. Give it a try. Seeking, accessing files, play and pause would significantly improve with 3.0 for uncompressed blu-ray. I use unraid jbod w/ cache on 1gps connection and never ran into problems.
